The two posters who mentioned getting OHIP after AIP both applied Inland. Stage 1 for inland is different, as I believe they also evaluate the applicant during inland stage 1, as opposed to only the sponsor for outland stage 1. I believe that would be the key difference here.

Hello,

I received the letter stating that I have met the requirements for eligibility as a sponsor. I have not received the second letter acknowledging receipt of my wife's permanent residence application. How long after receiving the first letter did you receive the second letter?

Thanks in advance!
Michael

Service Ontario can NOT help you with getting OHIP with AIP or even a DM letter. Because you have NEVER had OHIP you need a Service CANADA office. The folks at these offices are equipped to deal with AIP and DM emails/letters. There is a big difference between Service Ontario and Service Canada when it comes to new 'services' :D

Hope that helps you folks out

are you applying inland or outland? meaning, is her application being processed in her home country or inside canada? Is she currently living in Ontario and can prove residency for at least 3 months?

Generally, PR applicants are not eligible for OHIP. In order to qualify, an inland applicant needs to have the spousal OWP and be able to prove 6 mo. continuous employment first. For others, it is a pretty big fight to get it before landing as a PR. it starts with getting denied ohip, then writing a letter to the review board to have the application re-evaluated. you then have to prove CIC considers the pr applicant "approved in principle". for inland applicants, that means you need to have AIP. for outland applicants, i believe you need to get a letter from CIC stating this fact as I don't think the outland sponsor approval letter proves this. it is quite a difficult and lengthy process that does not guarantee success. Also, the person still has to prove residency in Ontario for 3 months before being eligible to receive OHIP.

May I know how are the cases treated for Parent's immigration. Such cases were not common in last few years but in 2016 the applications are getting processed very quickly.

My parents came to Ontario, Canada on SuperVisa while their immigration/PR application was in process. Their application was accepted and now ready for visa stamping. They may become landed immigrant in 3 to 4 weeks and I am hoping that they get OHIP at the time if not now. Do you think they can have any issue when applying for OHIP?

hi. i was responding to your questions in the other thread. once they land as PRs, they are eligible for OHIP. They can apply for it anytime after landing, and more than likely it will kick in after 90 days from their landing date. the OHIP office will tell you for sure when you apply. as long as they have the documentation required, there's no reason for a PR to be denied OHIP. As others have mentioned in the other thread, getting OHIP before pr status usually involves an appeals process.

The OHIP Review Board will have you sign a consent and then make the enquiries with CIC themselves. If you're outland and you've passed the eligibility assessment stage successfully and you meet the residency requirement, you'll be granted coverage.

Hello Missha, I just wanna share something about what was happening for applying the OHIP today and finally can have it.

Actually I had rejected for twice in Richmond Hill and Markham office as I had some documents ( AIP letter, Driver's license , bank statement ,credit card and passport )to prove out my immigration status but they insisted not allow me to obtain it and said the AIP means the PR application hasn't yet to be completed..

A month later I had received a DM letter then done that again at the Markham office. The lady kept questioning about my immigration status . I was giving her the instruction guide started to argue with her and requested telling me what the reason was. She didnt answer me felt shocked then asked me wait for a min and heading to her boss discussing my case . She came back and wrote down my personal infos calling somebody( Guessed from a head office ). After that she has requested me visiting the other office in Lawrence( that was a large one )to obtain it. I said okay then left. Ultimately that was quite smoothed at the Lawrence office. So everything been done ,the temp health card number has given me and recived the card with 3-4weeks. So i recommand if anyone want to obtain a OHIP by carrying a AIP or DM. Come visit to the Lawrence office. People there they are quite friendly and helpful, not some much people and more efficiently ;D ;D.

What does DM stand for ??

Actually it is Service Ontario, not Service Canada. I just spoke to them on the phone and they told me to call Service Ontario.

How to apply

You must apply for OHIP in person at a ServiceOntario centre. You can drop in, or book an appointment.

  • Get an application form online or from your local Service Ontario OHIP Office.
  • Fill it out.
  • Collect the documents you need.
  • Take your application and documents to your local Service Ontario OHIP Office.

Unless the rules have changed in the last two years. That post was written from personal experience at that time, two years ago. I went to my local Service Ontario. They advised I needed to go into the Service Canada in Windsor because I had never had OHIP prior to this and would need to fill out all the proper paperwork, however, when I was ready to renew my OHIP I could use my local Service Ontario office.
