I received 2 letters from CIC stating my sponsered to be appoved and to me " applicant " stating that

" This letter acknowledges receipt of your application for permanent resident status in Canada.
It has been determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent resident
status as a member of the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class. However, a final
decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent resident
have been met. These requirements include medical, security and background checks for you
and, if applicable, all of your family members, both in Canada and abroad, even if they are not
applying to join you in Canada at this time. You cannot become a permanent resident until you
and all your family members have met these requirements i.e Police Certificate"
Then given me instruction how to get the police certificate from the given country.

I went to Service Canada to apply for OHIP, but they refused saying that I have not been approved yet. I came home very disappointed and annoyed and went to Health Canada website and the website says "

if you are applying for Ontario health insurance coverage as an Applicant for Permanent Residence, you are required to present written confirmation from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) that you are eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada, which may be one of the following :

CIC Confirmation Letter – letter on CIC letterhead addressed to the Applicant for Permanent Residence that confirms that the applicant is eligible to apply for permanent residency in Canada;
CIC Immigration document such as a Work Permit, Visitor Record, Temporary Resident Permit or Study Permit with note in the “Remarks Section” that indicates that you have applied for permanent residence; or
A Work Permit case type 27, which are issued solely to individuals who have applied for permanent residence within Canada.

I have been confused, wondering why she said, I cant get the Ohip where the website says by showing the letterhead confirming that applicant is eligible to apply for PR in Canada can get the OHIP?

Oh yes you can!!! Complain. Complain. Complain. Talk to the manager. Make a stink.

Ask for the Supervisor!!

My wife went through the same nonsense and had to create a real scene before the silly girl at service desk was told by her supervisor that she was wrong and Anna was indeed eligible for OHIP.

We're in Ottawa. I don't know which service office she went to and she isn't here to ask right now (Off to her weekly Tai-Chi for preggy ladies ). Thank god Anna persisted, otherwise we'd be paying a very large bill related to her pregnancy. They will still insist on a 90 day wait. The 90 day wait begins on the date shown on the approval letter you received from CIC.

I'm in Mississauga.... went to a regular service ontario counter, they called somewhere and got the confirmation that we have to go to a "GOV SERVICE ONTARIO".

They gave 2 addresses close to my location:

14- 1151 Dundas St W / Mississauga (Westdale mall, west of Mavis)

142 - 3300 Bloor Street West / Etobicoke

We gave them the letter, and no questions asked. He even made the remark to hold tight to that letter because we will need it to renew OHIP until we got PR (OHIP with this letter is good only for a year)

The good news is... you have time to do it. The OHIP will be valid counting 3 month of the date of the letter.
Mine was 26FEB.. OHIP will start on 26MAY.

Hello Missha, I just wanna share something about what was happening for applying the OHIP today and finally can have it.

Actually I had rejected for twice in Richmond Hill and Markham office as I had some documents ( AIP letter, Driver's license , bank statement ,credit card and passport )to prove out my immigration status but they insisted not allow me to obtain it and said the AIP means the PR application hasn't yet to be completed..

A month later I had received a DM letter then done that again at the Markham office. The lady kept questioning about my immigration status . I was giving her the instruction guide started to argue with her and requested telling me what the reason was. She didnt answer me felt shocked then asked me wait for a min and heading to her boss discussing my case . She came back and wrote down my personal infos calling somebody( Guessed from a head office ). After that she has requested me visiting the other office in Lawrence( that was a large one )to obtain it. I said okay then left. Ultimately that was quite smoothed at the Lawrence office. So everything been done ,the temp health card number has given me and recived the card with 3-4weeks. So i recommand if anyone want to obtain a OHIP by carrying a AIP or DM. Come visit to the Lawrence office. People there they are quite friendly and helpful, not some much people and more efficiently ;D ;D.

I actually just called the Service Ontario mainline in Toronto after reading this post yesterday. I confirmed w/ a rep there, after reading the letters word for word that I have received so far from CIC and VO and she did confirm that, yes, I am eligible for OHIP. I have the sponsor's approval letter (in email format, so that is not valid, but told to bring with me), letter from VO on official letterhead stating that "they are finalizing my app...need to pay ROFP....". I was told that this letter, along with proof of signature such as passport, and proof of address in Canada (actual letter or statement i.e. bank statement) and I'm eligible. Hope this helps!

Hello,

I received the letter stating that I have met the requirements for eligibility as a sponsor. I have not received the second letter acknowledging receipt of my wife's permanent residence application. How long after receiving the first letter did you receive the second letter?

Thanks in advance!

Though this post has been dead since long, I am posting here so that others in future can use the information..

Not all ServiceOntario centers in Ontario deals with all classes of people. There are some which do not issue health cards for temporary residents! For example only the one in Westdale mall in Mississauga deals with Work Permit guyz. Rest of the centers in Mississauga dont. Similarly its one (among others) in Sheppard Avenue in Toronto for people on TRV. So, before going to one of the center, make sure to call and check if they can help you.

This is what came from their site:
Eligibility
Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). Generally, to be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :

be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; AND
be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; AND
be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; AND
make your primary place of residence in Ontario.

We also tried to obtain OHIP a couple of times prior to having the signed COPR and were refused. Once we had the signed COPR there was no problem and the 3 month waiting period started immediately that day. Landing occurred on May 24, 2013, applied for OHIP at Service Ontario on May 27,2013 and should receive OHIP card by August 27, 2013. As a taxpayer in Ontario I totally understand why there is a 3 month waiting period and find no fault with it even though it directly affected us.

I thought the same.

I am surprised to see that if the applicant is already here, then they can apply for OHIP if the sponsor was approved (stage 1 approval).

Is this true?

Then why, new immigrant have to wait 3 months when they are already an immigrant, the day they land?

Don't get me wrong. This is a good thing. I am just confused.
