Hi All,

I'm hoping someone is able to clarify the 3-month waiting period for OHIP.

According to the OHIP website (http://settlement.org/sys/faqs_detail.asp?faq_id=4001244) the 3-month period is defined as 'after you arrive in Ontario' which reads pretty clearly to me.

I arrived on a tourist visa on 30-Nov-12 and received PR on 13-Mar-13.

The Health Ontario website (http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/ohip_waiting_pd.aspx) states that OHIP happens three months after you establish residency- but doesn't define residency.

To me Residency and PR are 2 different things- is this incorrect? I am not sure if residency is a legal term which I do not meet or if Service Ontario has worded their website really unhelpfully.

I agreed Residency and PR are 2 different things. PR is merely a immigration status, while the term residency refers to the act of establishing or maintaining a residence in a given place.

As far as I know, if you are already in Canada, OHIP defines residency beginning at the point that you receive some visa other than visitor so in your case, it would be when you got your PR. However, go to OHIP, apply for your health card, discuss this with them.

We can all share our opinions but at the end of the day, OHIP decides when you get your health card and we don't
