Hi members,

My parents are with me in Toronto as PR on PGP 2019 program and they have received their OHIP cards, they both are above 65 years - how does ODB work for them, do they qualify for ODB?
Any seniors @scylla @Hurlabrick @canuck78 , or anyone has any experience with it pls advise..

seniors @scylla @Hurlabrick @canuck78
Do they also qualify for Seniors Co Payment program which is for couples under 37000 CAD income per annum. Please reply keeping in view that sponsor son/daughtet sign an agreement with gov of ca that they under take to bear expences incurred on parents for 20 years. Thanks

I don't know.
After doing further research I feel they dont qualify, as what comes under social assistance as per ca website "facilities offered to everyone is not social assistance but offered to low income group" comes under social assistance. This is my interpretation, request further inputs if any one with more knowledge on this topic.

I have the same question. I guess you found this:

https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=1526&top=14

What is considered social assistance
Some benefits (money, goods or services) from provinces or territories are considered to be social assistance for the purpose of sponsoring. This includes assistance from the government to cover basic needs like:

  • health care not covered by public health care (extra benefits paid by the government to low-income people or others in need)

does senior co-payment fall under public health care?(extra benefits to low-income seniors?) does ODB fall under public health care(extra benefits to seniors?) I'm going down the rabbit hole. if parents can have ODB (automatically enrolled when they get health care coverage), can they apply for SCP? Or do they need to do sth to be removed from ODB? Someone pls enlighten me.

Any senior qualifies for ODB it is not considered welfare. Any parent sponsored under PGP qualifies for ODB. They qualify for ODB as someone 65+. You can also qualify for ODB under 65 if on social assurance. A pharmacy will be able to register them for ODB with the OHIP card at the pharmacy.

They definitely qualify for ODB. Believe SCP is considered more social assistance because it targets the extremely low income seniors but you’d need to verify that. The amount one pays with ODB is already pretty minimal.
