Hello all,

I am busy putting together my application from Australia. I know that employment references are required, but here in Australia nobody seems to get anything in writing - it is done verbally. Are people supposed to go back to all their old employers and get detailed references?? And how far back do they expect people to have written work references for? One year, ten years??

Not only that, but in general a reference would not have nearly as much detail as what they have listed for their requirements.

Is there anyone from Australia who has come across this and how did you handle it? Is is sufficient to just supply an employment letter from ones current employer?

Thanks.

bump... Australia is not alone in this... check posts from Indians... same story

If you cannot get what they want and require. Do the following, as this is what I am going to do wherever an Employer is not able to produce one that I need.
Get whatever you can. Write a letter explaining the situation plus send in a Professional CV outlining your responsibilities and duties in those companies. I am sure that will do the trick. Remember that they do verify by calling the employer(s).

Thanks BobbyB for that info. I'm sure most people find previous employers unwilling to assist them, so having a CV is a great idea.

Do they verify transcripts from education institutions? How do they do it? Do they value work reference more than certificates? Do they accept online diplomas/degrees provided one has solid work experience?

Thanks for the input.

Yes. They do. I think, that is the reason why you need to get them in a sealed envelope from your UNI/COLLEGE, isn't it?
Both Work Experience References and Certificates are highly valued -since you apply as a skilled worker!!!
They do accept some but not all distance and online diplomas and degrees - as per post on this forum.
