Hello,

Does any one know how the following works.

I am planning on visiting Canada in August this year to activate my Visa and apply for the PR Card, I then plan to return to the UK for a year or two to save enough money to then make a permanent move to Canada either next summer or the summer of 2017 (Finances depending).

Once I have "Landed" and applied for the PR card do I need to start filing Canadian Tax Returns, and will my earnings in the UK be subject to Canadian Tax. Or will I be classed as Non Resident and therefore exempt?

Would be great to have some insight.

hi dude,

i have a question. Lets say i obtain my visa today. What is the maximum time i can take before making the first landing in canada? also, what is the minimum days we can stay in canada until we obtain PR card & what is the minimum duration (frequency of visits) i can make visits to canada if i decide to stay some more time in my home country after first landing?

thanks!!

You need to make sure that you do not establish ties in Canada when you land, other wise you'll be considered resident and will have to pay tax on your worldwide income. Here's what is considered ties to Canada:

Significant residential ties to Canada include:

*a home in Canada;
*a spouse or common-law partner in Canada; and
*dependants in Canada

Secondary residential ties that may be relevant include:

*personal property in Canada, such as a car or furniture;
*social ties in Canada, such as memberships in Canadian recreational or religious organizations;
*economic ties in Canada, such as Canadian bank accounts or credit cards;
*a Canadian driver's licence;
*a Canadian passport; and
*health insurance with a Canadian province or territory.

Your visa is valid for the time that the Medical exams are. In other words, one year from the time the medical exam was done. You will be eligible to receive the PR card once you land in Canada, but it takes 4-6 weeks to be mailed to the address that you indicate when you land (the address has to be a Canadian address). To maintain your PR you have to reside in Canada for a minimum of 2 years within the five year period from the time that you have landed.

As was mentioned, do not establish any ties to Canada. The more ties you establish, the more chance there is CRA will make you a deemed or factual resident for tax purposes even though you won't be physically living here.

So after you land as PR, do NOT get a SIN, health card, license, open any bank accounts, apply for any Cdn credit cards, buy any homes, etc etc. I would do all this after you arrive permanently.
