My husband [the Canadian citizen] is sponsoring me [the American citizen]. We have lived in the States since October 2010 and are sponsoring outland.

We are getting close to having all of our stuff together but I am still so confused about the Notice of Assessment that is mentioned. We have no co signer and he has had no income in Canada since 2010. On the document checklist it says that if we don't supply a Notice of Assessment, we have to provide an explanation.

What do we do/how do we proceed? Any help is greatly appreciated!

If he didn't pay Canadian taxes then you do exactly what you already said and provide an explanation that you both lived in the States and didn't file Canadian taxes.

My situation, in this respect, is similar to your husband's (I've lived overseas for about 5 years and, legally of course, haven't payed Canadian taxes in that time).

So, I prepared a letter to the CIC in my SA application entitled 'Reason For Not Providing Option C Printout' -- I am assuming by 'Notice of Assessment' you mean the Option C... if not then you can ignore this post ::). In the letter I explained that I am not eligible to obtain the Option C for reasons x, y and z. Then, I also added that in lieu of the Option C I included letters from my employers and university (I am a student and part-time worker) evidencing some income in my application package. It was approximately 400 words (ie very short).

I was concerned this would be a big obstacle, but, considering my SA was approved rather quickly, I guess it wasn't. If you have a child in common, then your husband may have to provide more information.

They have changed the request of the Option C to Notice of Assessment as of February 2016.

Thank you! That information about the letter is helpful.

What extra information would you think he would need to provide if we have children in common? We have 2 young daugthers, ages 1 & 3.

I'm not certain what's required if you have children, but I think your husband may have to provide more in depth proof of employment and income to show he can support you guys (eg. pay stubs from the last 12 months etc.). I recall there being a list of acceptable proofs on the Sponsor checklist you must include with your application.

Since I am just sponsoring my wife and we have no children in common I am technically not 'required' to provide proof of employment. I did anyways because it (a) provides data in lieu of the option C (thereby allowing me to provide a 'complete' application), (b) shows that we've been saving money for our move to Canada, and (c) provides extra proof that we've been living in the same city for the duration of our relationship.

Sorry I can't be more helpful :(
There are lots of people on this forum with experience in your type of situation, keep looking around and you should be able to find a good answer.

Oh. My bad. I should have clarified. My daughters are Canadian citizens already so they are not being sponsored. So now it appears as though I am back to having the same situation as you...which makes it easy!
