Hey, I'm looking into moving outside of Canada to work for a few years as a non-resident. I recently sponsored my wife into Canada as a permanent resident and the plan is for her to come with me.

If I am a non-resident am I still a citizen? If so, does her time out of the country with me count for keeping her permanent residence?

thanks

A Canadian citizen can live outside of Canada for as long as he or she wants and still remain a Canadian citizen. A spouse who lives with you outside of Canada can use those days as 'in-Canada' days for keeping PR status. They don't count for getting citizenship, though.

Hi Barlowe: Being a Canadian Citizen, you still can sponsor your spouse from outside Canada. But you have to satisfy the immigration officer that you have a plan to come back to Canada after your spouse will get PR Visa.

This is correct.

Thanks, this is very helpful.

My wife is currently a Permanent Resident. You guys confirmed what I thought about the time counting with her status. I didn't know it didn't count toward becoming a Citizen though.

Any information on her working outside of Canada too? Where we are going there is a very real possibility she'll be able to get a job as well.

Her working outside of Canada is fine with Canada. It is completely up to the country where you two will be living.

Keep proof you two are living together, such as a joint lease, both names on utility bills, a mortgage or property deed in both names, etc. Her time with you out of Canada counts as part of her residency requirements for keeping her PR, but you may need to prove it.

These 2 rules are kind of contradictory...don't you guys think? ;D So during the PR sponsorship process, the Canadian spouse is allowed to be outside of Canada, but has to promise that he/she will return to Canada once the sponsored spouse got the PR. However, once the sponsored person has become a PR, in fact the Canadian spouse can be outside of Canada, and the sponsored person can accompany without even losing the PR...hmmm...!!

Let us know where you are going and the rest of us will follow.

They are, but plans do change.
I'm assuming the OP's wife has already landed in Canada and is a PR now.
If a sponsor says on the application that he or she is planning to live abroad with his/her spouse after the spouse gets PR, believe me, CIC will not be issuing that visa. But someone could prove they are planning to move back to Canada, stay there for a while, then get a great job offer abroad. It will then be perfectly OK to move abroad with the recently-landed spouse.

We are possibly headed to dubai. the process has just begun with the job, it'll take over a year before we actually move (if we do). I keep an eye on this forum and try to help out where I can. So I'll let you all know how its going and give any help I can.

My wife landed in Canada last september. the processing time was about 8 months. during processing and until recently the plan has been to live in Canada but we're pretty mobile and are always open to other opportunities so we'll definitely look into this one. a few years there will be a big boost in income and if she works too... plus its in a field that I really enjoy, I'm an engineer.
