NOC Codes

Hello,

I've finished my Master's in the US and returned to India in 2017. I have been a full-time (over 30 hours a week) paid Research Assistant (in the field (in the field of Materials Science & Engineering) at a university research center for over 2 years since then. I'm unable to find my particular NOC Code on the CRS Tool. I know I come under Skill Type A. I have a few queries about this -

1. What would be the particular NOC Code for this (if anyone knows or has been in a similar position to mine)? The closest I found was 4012 - Post Secondary Teaching and Research Assistants. is this right? I'm confused because I've finished a Master's too, which is post-tertiary education, which isn't there in the list.

2. If you have a work experience of 2 years and 6 months, would that still qualify as 2 years only or does it qualify as 3 years? Is there any marker, like anything below 6 months is taken as the lower number and anything higher would be the next number, For Example, 2y 4m = 2y, whereas 2y 8m = 3y?

3. This is for confirmation - I had also been a paid Research Assistant during my Master's in the US, for 2.5 years. Can it qualify as work experience or no? I think it was 20 hours a week.

Looking forward to an expeditious response. Thank you in advance!

"which is post-tertiary education"
There is no measure for 'post tertiary'. It is all post secondary (including post graduate).

"2. If you have a work experience of 2 years and 6 months, would that still qualify as 2 years only or does it qualify as 3 years?"
How would 2.5 years qualify as 3 years?

"3. This is for confirmation - I had also been a paid Research Assistant during my Master's in the US, for 2.5 years. Can it qualify as work experience or no? I think it was 20 hours a week."
It qualifies as work experience.

How would 2.5 years qualify as 3 years? was because I read somewhere

Thank you for your response! I appreciate it!

The reason I asked question #3 was because I read 2 caveats to this somewhere which said -
"any work done while being a full-time student does not count" (this is only in Canada)
"and a full-time position is defined as officially 30 hours a week for a year or 15 hours a week for 2 years"

As you may know, Research Assistants (while studying) are generally paid equivalent of 12 hours a week or 20 hours a week, depending on the university. Mine was officially 12 hours a week (not 20 as I previously mentioned), I went back and checked. However, we used to work 50 - 60 hours a week atleast. And there was no gap in my payment over 2.5 years at the university.

If I can include this as foreign work experience, my CRS score increases by 25 points. Hence, I am confused. And if I can include it, I should ask my university for an employment letter.

Could you please clarify this for me?

Thank you!

"any work done while being a full-time student does not count"
It is part of the definition of Canadian work experience and applies to work in Canada, with a study permit.

""and a full-time position is defined as officially 30 hours a week""
a full time position is 30 hours/week, but part time work can be accumulated to equal 1560 hours (one year of full time work) in a longer time frame.
If you have 2.5 years at 20 hours/week that would equate to 2600 hours so 1 claimable year of work experience.

Oh ok, that sounds good.

I'm doing the math here, at the (official) 12 hours a week for 2 years, 5 months and 1 week. And it amounts to 125×12 = 1500 hours.

Shoot, seems like it falls short by just 60 hours!

I can't claim this as foreign work experience right?

Official aside, do you have any idea of how many hours you were actually paid for, which is the real point of the exercise?
If only 1500 hours then no, doesn't count.
I shall confirm these things with my university.

Without using it as my foreign experience, I have a score of 456 on the CRS tool, which is above the current cut-off of 431. With it, my score increases to 481.

If you look more closely, you'll see that the 431 cutoff was for Canadian Experience Class only draws. When FSWs such as yourself are drawn the cutoff is north of 470 so you'll need those extra 50 points.

1. It means you are a post-secondary teaching or research assistant, it's about your job not your qualifications. post-secondary is used as a global term encompassing any studies which are post-secondary including university.

2. You would still qualify, it just depends on whether you need the additional points associated with having 3 years of foreign work experience or not.

3. It can qualify as meeting the minimum experience requirements but you won't be able to claim CRS points for it.

But I see just the Experience Class and Nominee Class. Where can I check the one for cut off for FSW?

Thank you for your response.

Do you mean to say a score of 456 would qualify? Because @thevisawhisperer mentioned that FSW need more than 470.

I think I need the extra points.

What i mean is that you would qualify according to the minimum requirements in order to be a FSW candidate, because the minimum is to have at least 1 year of foreign work experience to be an FSW candidate. So as long as you have this you can enter the pool.

Qualifying for an ITA is another matter, this is getting an invitation to apply for PR in a given round, therefore your score has to be at or above the cut-off score, which is the minimum score accepted for that round.

Right now that is what is in the 470's, and that's what TVW is referring to. He's correct that 456 at the moment is too few point to qualify for an ITA according to recent trends, but you will get more points once you cross the 3 years of work experience mark.

Oh ok. I have already reached out to my University Department to find out my exact number of hours. Keeping fingers crossed and hoping they will help soon.
