Hello everyone.

I am a new PR (yesterday was my 1 year anniversary) and I want to sponsor my husband. We're putting together the documents and the only thing left is the Tax documents. I filed my returns 2 weeks ago but was unable to submit electronically. Called CRA and the only solution is to file by mail because I am a first time filer. According to them, this could take 8+ weeks. I also cannot create a MyCRA account yet. So I cannot get the Notice of Assessment or Option C. Please would you advise I do as 8 weeks is a really long time. I sent the returns by mail last week already but looking for other options. Can I just submit a LOE instead?

There is no requirement to submit tax documents. Not even a strict income requirement you just need to show you can support your spouse financially without government help. Proof of savings and employment should be fine.

If you are working in Canada, provide an original letter from your current employer stating your period of employment, salary, and regular
hours per week or supporting financial documents if you are self-employed AND one of these documents issued by the Canada Revenue
Agency (CRA). As of February 28, 2020, Line 150 (Total Income) was changed to Line 15000. Notice of Assessments and Option C prints
prior to 2019 will have Total Income listed as Line 150:
• Your most recent Notice of Assessment. This must include line 15000 (Total Income), or
• Proof of income statement (Option C).
Note: You can view (and print) your tax return(s) as well as other personal tax information using the CRA's My Account online service.
To register or login, visit https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/account-
individuals.html.
If you cannot provide a Notice of Assessment or a proof of income statement (Option C) for the most recent taxation year, you must
provide an explanation on a separate sheet of paper, accompanied by relevant supporting financial documentation to show how you can
support the person(s) you are sponsoring.

That's what's written in the document checklist

You literally posted my answer and the answer:
“If you cannot provide a Notice of Assessment or a proof of income statement (Option C) for the most recent taxation year, you must
provide an explanation on a separate sheet of paper, accompanied by relevant supporting financial documentation to show how you can

Thank you. I was wondering if not having the tax documents would be a problem or if anyone else didn't have it and submitted an LOE instead.

We have the same case. We just submitted the letter of explanation, payslip, confirmation of employment (from her employer), and bank statement/bank cert.
