I dont agree with an expert recommendation on scrapping hotel quarantine as there is no meaningful alternatives provided. Yes NZ and AU do not share landborder but what i suggested and still standwith was to have a total shutdown somewhere last year as all other measures were not working in timely manner. Exception could be on monitored cargos. I dont think AU/NZ success story was because they dont share landborder, then they imported all the cases from air travellers… We also dont have breakdown of cases imported from landborders either or they are available but not for public, so in absence of both then desperate measures are what we are asking.
you cant live in a fairy world locking yourself , grow up. the virus is gonna get there one day. everything is connected in some way. its just a question of how to "mitigate" the risk and identify potential spreaders & quarantine when identified. those doctors ain't stupid to have not thought about this while we are here going all Einstein on this. If you like AU/NZ and how they handle such situations, may be you might be aiming the wrong country :D

There are multiple reasons, not one, why AU/NZ controlled it better. I never said the absence of land borders is the "only" reason. And there are multiple variables why a model that worked for one country cannot be implemented in another. In fact, thousands of reasons; I just quoted one of them. Well, like it or not, the expert panel knows better than any of us. And when it says it has found the hotel quarantine ineffective and unnecessary, it kinda is.
If expert panel know better than any of us here according to what you just said, im reminding you that other expert panel who also know better than us came up with current guidelines which you agree are ineffective.

Sorry i was speaking to the kid "inside" you that made that childish statement. Irrespective of what we say here to each other wasting both our time and energy that'll lead to nowhere let's just accept some things do happen due to lots of complex factors (including political motivations). Btw, the one typing this is physically 26 yrs old.

Bottom line is, if everybody is quarantining properly and not try to work around the system, then the system might have worked a little better. Sad fact remains, up until recently you still see people calling out to strangers for possible sharing of quarantine. The sooner this pandemic is contained, the sooner everybody could get back to a semblance of “normal” before the pandemic. But then, some people think that these measures are specifically targeting them individually and personally...

Suggessting total shutdown for 2 weeks and reopen economy to benefit everyone including newcombers is “childish statement”, wow something is wrong with you. Same approached used by some developed countries including China and worked is childish statement/ recommendation?
By the way, i thought i was arguing with someone more experienced than someone doing 1yr online waiting to come to Canada. Stop that bullish and attacking characters/strangers.

Was the personal attack necessary? You could have still passed your message across without that first sentence. This was a civil conversation until that line....

I get this so many times when we are discussing about suspension of flights or restrictions, especially from certain people. They’ll always come on you no matter how nice you put your comments. Guess Canada will soon import this attitude, lol

simple as this - 2 weeks total shutdown - cases go down - okay - slowly reopen - cases will still be imported somehow - go again in lockdown? this will be an endless cycle. thats why the panel refutes the AU/NZ model you praise of. Also, China did that initially to control a virus whose severity was unknown and that was ABSOLUTELY necessary. No doubt about that. but this is an evolving situation - and so are the panel expert suggestions. Lets end the personal part right here, doesn't matter who is 40 and went to my profile to see what i am doing, who is waiting eagerly to enter Canada doing an online course or whatnot! Peace out!

Yeah sorry about that, got a bit carried away by reading that suggestion.

Folks, let's not bring study permits and refusals to this thread and it be around quarantine plz.

Regarding the hotels, one really saddening fact that the govt didn't do anything about is - most of them did not refund the money for the days you have not stayed in the hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to call that an organized "loot"

Let's not put any country on a pedestal. A country is comprised of people and people are fallible. It just needs the correct catalyst to bring out your deepest hidden prejudice obscured by layers of privilege.

There's merit in the argument of both sides.
