No longer in status?

Hi everyone!

I am in a situation with my little brother that I'm hoping maybe someone here can help with.

My brother is an international student in Toronto on a student visa. He is allowed to work through his student visa and always worked along side school.

Well, this semester my brother decided he wants to take a year off and just work. Not study.
He is no longer a student in his University. He actually was kicked out last semester.

Now he is of the belief that he can continue living and working in Canada whether he is a student or not because his student visa is still valid for some more years and "no one will check."

I, having studied in the much stricter US, think that he is now out of status and his visa is no longer valid. I also don't think that "no one will check."

Does anyone have experience with this?

The authorities would check when he is nearing his expiration of the current study permit and renewing a new one.. The Officer would check his grades and current status in Canada when granting an extension.

I would advise to apply to one of the accredited colleges in Toronto and getting a diploma as colleges are easier than University..

He's out of status and he's working illegally.

See:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-offcampus.asp

Specifically this bit:

"If you are no longer a full-time student or do not maintain satisfactory academic results, you must return your work permit to a local Citizenship and Immigration Canada office."

It's my understanding that schools must regularly report on the status of study visa students. Assuming that's correct, immigration will find out from his school once he's flagged as no longer attending.
