Francomaj,

Pls check your PM.

Hi Abehola, Firm, Egrace,
Unfortunately I am not allowed to send PMs as of yet (probably because I am a new member). However, I'll try to provide general responses to your questions. Montreal, just like everywhere else, is not El dorado. There are challenges and there are advantages.

Housing isn't much of a problem in the real sense as there are loads of apartments available for rent pretty much everywhere. Rental agreements are typically long-term, i.e. for 12 months. There are, however, very few landlords or businesses that provide short-term accommodation renewable on a month-on-month basis--- I would recommend this for new immigrants since it affords the opportunity to have a good look-around for suitable accommodation before committing oneself to a 1-year contract. For starters, I would advise renting on the main Island where most immigrants stay due to its proximity to Downtown Montreal, African and Asian shops and Mosques, Churches etc. Yes, those churches you're familiar with have parishes here: The Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, RCCG, Deeper Life Bible Church, Chris Okotie's (the name has just eluded me) etc etc.

Per further university studies, you could start pressing the relevant buttons right now in anticipation of your arrival in Montreal. Funding wont be much of a problem as the Government of Quebec proudly provides funding through the Quebec Loans and Bursary program. University tuition fees hover around $3500 per annum (for permanent residents and citizens), which is a real steal! Getting an offer for PhD studies involves a great deal of strategic planning. Abehola, we'll discuss that at some point. There are also opportunities for 3-12 month refresher courses in Business Administration, Marketing, Insurance Administration, Graphic Design etc. etc. in colleges (which also have bursaries and loans attached to them should prospective applicants be cash-strapped).

Regarding job opportunities, I would tell you straight up that being bilingual helps a great deal. If your French is either non-existent or not that great, you can take advantage of the French language immersion programme organized for newly landed immigrants. The Government is also generous enough to pay a limited amount of money in bursary to participants. I would recommend taking the French immersion course if you are really desirous of enjoying your Canadian (not just Quebec) residency to the fullest extent possible. Still on the job market, most employers prefer to deal with applicants with either Quebec qualifications or credentials deemed equivalent to their Quebec counterparts. It would be in your best interest to submit your credentials to the Quebec Foreign Credentials Evaluation office as soon as you arrive, or better still, 4 months prior to your date of arrival. Note that you would need to ask the University(ies) you attended in Nigeria to send your transcripts directly to the evaluation office. I'd be happy to signpost you to the relevant weblink should you choose to do this.

I could go on and on and on... because there's so much to say. One finally thing though: Do not fret if you have no knowledge of French. You can always get by with just English as pretty much everyone is bilingual on the Island of Montreal and its environs.

I hope this summary will go a long way in illuminating pathways as to what living in Montreal feels like.

Best,

Francomaj

Thanks Franco for the explanation

How is the weather and job market in Montreal. Are u free to relocate from Montreal to Toronto for instansce if you choose to or are there restrictions? If you are fortunate to get an office work, is the communication primarily done using French or English?

If you do not have proficiency in French Language, how does it affect your points.

Dearest Naija applicants,

Goodday to you all.

Just to share my experience so far.

I am pre June 2010 applicant. My application was received by Accra V/O in August 2009 , first medical was done in June 2010 .In September 2010 I relocated with my family to the UK from Nigeria and immediately informed the visa office to update my current address, I also informed them of the fact that my wife was pregnant and would be due in May 2011. I got a response from the visa office that as soon as the baby is born, we should add the child to our application( by sending copy of child's passport , 4 passport photographs , C$150 , updated IM008 and IMM5406 and birth certificate of child) .My wife gave birth to the baby in April 2011 and all required documents were sent in June ( delay was as a result of getting Nigerian passport for my child in London). We finally got our re-medicals form on 8th of July( 2 weeks after sending documents) including medicals for the new baby. MR was done on 21th July and receipt already sent to V/O. At this point we have not received request for UPDATED PCC.

Jada , I think we have very similar timelines and scenerio, please lets keep in touch.

Thanks and cheers.

Hi Firm,

By strategic planning, I mean two things: First, You'd need to apply by December 2011 at the latest for the next Fall start, i.e. Sept. 2012 start. Secondly, PhD admissions are not as straight-forward as Masters' and Bachelors'. In the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities faculties, you'd first need to prepare a 2500-word research proposal, and then contact relevant Professors in the departments/research institutes you'd like to research in (with a 300-word abstract of your proposal attached), with a view to seeking their opinion on the workability of your research, and the possibility of taking a PhD under their supervision. The importance of this initial contact cannot be over-emphasized as it helps not just to streamline your search for admission along the lines of schools with suitable research personnel and facilities, but also to get valuable feedback on your proposal. It will also be an opportunity for you to market your candidacy.

It's however important to note that the tide tilts a little bit in your favour once you've 'landed' in Canada in view of the fact that you can meet with the Professor(s) in person, thus eliminating the challenges associated with correspondence by email.

The application process however differs from department to department as I would expect Engineering and Science departments to function in a manner that aligns with the dynamics of PhD research in those fields. Your best bet is to go on your prospective school's website and have a thorough read-through.

Hi Kcsider,

The job market is like everywhere else. You have brighter chances of securing a job in your field of studies in no time if your occupation is on the list of occupations-in-demand. This is, of course, without prejudice to the fact that you'll need to search in the right places, and vigorously too. Besides, you need to have your credentials evaluated before you even start looking.

Per weather, you might be glad (or perhaps not) to learn that it gets as cold as -35 to -40 degrees centigrade during winter and as hot as 35 degrees centigrade during summer. It's a world of two extremes.

Technically speaking, you can relocate to Toronto if you so desire. You should, however, remember that you are required, as part of your immigration project, to sign a declaration to the effect that you intend to make Quebec your home. No one knows for sure if and when the Government will take action on defaulters, and what action(s) they would take. It might be safer to relocate only when you can prove that you tried your best to make Quebec work for you.

Best,

Francomaj

You're more than welcome. Well, I was very active on another forum--- British Expats--- until I ran into this one. I already spoke French before I 'landed' in Canada. Not to worry, you'll be okay with your intermediate level. It's only a matter of time before you begin to speak it to some degree of fluency. My wife, for instance, spoke no word of French prior to our arrival in Canada. I'd say that the French Immersion course helped a great deal by not just giving her the theoretical knowledge of the language, but also equipping her with the 'tools' required to practice it in the outer world. Everyone copes. Some even learn on the streets by just interacting with native speakers (even though research has shown that these set of people tend to speak better than they can write). Besides, you can speak English all you want as almost everyone is, to some extent, bilingual.
