I want to thank all who shared in my joy as I landed sfely on Friday in Canada. I will share a little of my experience bcs i landed on a weekend and has not been able to do much until Mon/Tue. The first counsel is that, those intending to land should consider landing from March if they have luxury of time. Canada is extremely cold now.Snow everywhere and for a new immigrant, if u don't have a good host that can volunteer his time to take u around, u may find movement very difficult. walking in the snow even for 1 minute is terrible with your winter jacket, and other regalia u use to pad urself. What I am trying to say is that movement is limited during this period bcs of cold and there are a lot of things u r to do within the first few days, weeks and months that u arrive. Enough of that.
I landed safely in Toronto to the glory of God, did all documentations, checks and clearing within 15-20mins before boarding my connecting flight to Edmonton. After landing in Toronto (being the first point of entry to canada) my luggage which was already checked in to my final destination from Abuja were offloaded nd I had to pick them up and check them in for onward trip to Edmonton later. You should therefore note that at ur first point of entry to Canada, u will need to pick up ur luggage and re check-in if u r still proceeding to another destination in Canada. My luggage was not opened throughout except in Abuja. I also carried a talking drum like golden apple but I cleaned it very well to be free from cobwebs b4 leaving Nigeria(Tx to the counsel of Golden apple). At Toronto airport, my first contact was a custom officer who received my custom form and asked if I had any food stuff and my response was no. She further asked why I ticked the box for meat or meat product and i responded that i had a drum made from processed animal skin. She asked for how much i was carrying bcs indicated that I had over 10,000 CAD. I told her but never asked me to bring out my money.I went with all the money to proof fund for me and dependants though I landed alone (I am actually here as a fore runner). Within 1 minute I was tru with her.She used a coloured pencil to cross out the form(meaning cleared) and she directed me to an immigration officer(here they will always tell u what to do next unlike Nija that they want u to use ur common sense for everything). At the immigration counter, I was asked for my documents and I asked the lady which one bcs I had so many documents even the forms I sent to Accra. She said my passport and Confirmation of Permanent Resident Form.I gave her and she asked a few questions as she filled the form.At this pont she asked if i had an address in canada where my permanent resident card could be sent.I gave her my host's address and she documented.she told me that my pR card will be sent to that address and I will receive in 4-6weeks.She latter took the original form with passport photograph attached and returned the duplicate copy after i signed all the places she asteriked for me to sign. She said I should keep the copy she gave me carefully as I may need to use it to apply for my Social Insurance number/card, drivers licence and health insurance. The immigration officer also crossed out the Visa as it is only valid for one entry(subsequently, PR card will be used to re-enter Canada). I thanked her and left in about 4-5 mins.she told me to meet another lady in red jacket. I don't know who she was but she welcomed me and gave me some documents on Social Insurance number and further directed me to a nother colleague of her for further briefing. The lady gave me some magazines and new comer to Canada day planner. She gave me a checklist of things I should do within the first few week of landings and finally, she gave me a blue handbag to carry all the books(These officers won my admiration as they did their work cheerfully and briskly-no ceremony except u create one by urself).I was directed to another immigration officer who now collected my initially assessed custom forms that I filled in the plane. She asked if I had a list of things that will come later which I gave to her. She made some inputs in the computer and asked me to wait a while for her.she went in and in about 2 minutes she came out with a print out showing the value of my goods and told me to give it to my shipping company and I will not pay anything on them. That was the last person that attended to me and she directed me to where I would pick up my checked in luggage. All tru in Toronto women attended to me-“BLESSED WAS IWIN2 AMONGS WOMEN”. After picking my luggage, I checked it in again into Edmonton bound plane-no tagging again bcs it carried one already indicating my final destination.
Let me jump the story. I arrived Edmonton around 5.10pm local time after flying for another 4 ½ hrs within same country(Edmonton is currently 2hrs behind Toronto and 8hrs behind Nigeria)-Canada is very very big. I came out with my winter jacket and head warmer and thank for my Sister and family that were already waiting to receive me. We quickly took some shots and I waited for my luggage to appear on the conveyor's belt. Here something amazing happened. Nobody was checking that ur tag coincides with what u have on ur ticket.I think we should take note of this and be sure we stay by the belt until our luggage arrive as somebody else can pick up another person's luggage and that will be final if done deliberately.
To cross from the terminal into the car park where my sister parked was terrible as the cold nearly got me frozen with all my regalia. It is extremely cold here o sincerely. My bed was plugged to electric warmer despite the heating of the house before I could sleep-Tx to my sister and family. I have been to mildly cold countries but this one na helele. Let me stop her until I have more gists. I am very fine to the glory of God. Planning to carry my talking drum to church later in the morning to thank Jehovah Jireh,The Elohin, The Mighty God who parted the red sea with the blast of His nostrils. Let somebody in the house shout Halleluyah.May u all receive ur own miracle in the name of Jesus. Love u all.
NB: Pls don't mind my typo errors o bcs I could not read tru again as it is 3.00am here and need to sleep now
