Hi,

My parents are arriving very soon. They got their PR. I would like to make things easier for them.
I came here 12 years ago and i remember being a rush. But don't remember.
But I can't think of any thing else other than these 2":

1. Make sure to declare things to bring in their subsequent visits at the border.
2. Apply for DL
3. I think SIN will automatically be posted to the address they give at the border. oh!. that means they will have to enter fill in the SIN forms at the border? Do they have to fill in any additional forms?
4. Apply for Health card now with a Canadian Bank account mail. But they will send it after 3 months. RIght? or do they have to apply for it 3 months after?

Do they have to bring in any thing other than the PR when they come in?
Please let me know if I am missing any thing?

Regards,
Shiyam

Hi Shiyam,

I'm assuming that they are going to land in Ontario. If so then:

1) They don't apply for the SIN cards at the airport. They will have to apply at a Service Canada office where they will be getting their SIN numbers and providing an address where the SIN cards will be sent. They can do this the next day of their landing. It is not done automatically.
2) They can apply for health cards straight after landing, but they will only receive the cards after 3 months.

I'm not sure how the above works for other provinces, but I'm guessing that the SIN card procedure is the same everywhere in Canada.

Regards

Alberta gives healthcare immediately if you've moved from an international location. You should bring proof of residence.

Does this mean upon landing in Alberta, your health cards will be provided immediately after application without waiting for a 3-month period?

I am asking this because my family and I will be landing in Edmonton, Alberta in May 2013.

Please advise.

Thank you very much.

Moving to Alberta from outside Canada / immigrants

If you are moving or returning to Alberta from outside Canada, you might be eligible for coverage on the date of your arrival. You must register within 3 months of arrival. Newcomers to Canada are required to present a copy of their Canada entry document along with their other supporting documents.
This applies to permanent residents. You'll need to fill out this form:
