Hello, I am a canadian citizen, residing in Ontario, have a foreign national pregnant wife living abroad. My question is whether my newborn child will have any health coverage by OHIP? I understand that my wife will have no coverage but the newborn will be a Canadian citizen through me. Additionally, do I qualify for prental leave and covered by EI
Your help will be much appreciated.

thanks

If the child is born in Canada he or she will have health coverage and you definitely should be able to apply for parental leave., since you are a Canadian citizen.

Recent posts have stated that OHIP will give babies instant coverage if they move to Canada at up to 6-7 months of age. If they move later, they will be subject to a 3 month waiting period like other newcomers in Ontario.

You sure can apply for EI parental leave but as your wife and baby are living in another country, I am not sure how they will handle it.

Does anyone happen to know if this is stated on the OHIP website anywhere in writing? I've had a look, but can't seem to find it anywhere. We just want to be 1000% certain of this in our planning. Thanks.

Just shoot them an email or call directly so that they can confirm for sure
