Please excuse my newbie questions.

I am a Canadian Citizen by birth and currently living in Ontario.
I've known my wife (who lives in Colombia) for a few years and we were recently legally married in her country with members of my Canadian and her Colombian family members present.
I wish to sponsor her here to Canada where we plan to raise a family.
We are close in age, never married before, I have a well paying job and own my own home.
I'm absolutely confused about which forms to complete that are available on the CIC website.
The package of forms is unclear to me and it appears that I apply to Mississauga and when I'm approved to sponsor her, my file is sent to Bogota.

Q1 May I ask a kind experienced poster to please explain which forms, fees and supporting documents I need to commence the process?

Q2 When does my wife complete the necessary forms? We are thousands of kilometres apart.

1. This page lists which forms you and your partner need to complete. You, the sponsor need to complete the forms titled Part 1: Sponsorship forms and your partner, the principal applicant needs to complete the forms titled Part 2: Immigration forms

Note that not every document listed is required, you will need to read through the guides to find out which you require.

Also, there is a country specific guide which your partner needs to follow. For Colombia applicants that guide is here.

And for question 2 both your partner can complete the forms at any time, but both sets of forms need to be sent to Mississauga at the same time.

Everything you need to know is on the first link I gave you.

Thanks for the help, Andrew-Brit.

I downloaded and printed the guides and forms you linked to.

Am I correct in my understanding that?

I (as the sponsor) complete the required Part 1 Sponsorship Forms.

My wife (as the applicant) in Colombia completes the required Part 2 Immigration Forms and Part 3 Country Specific Document Checklist/Photos/Medical/Police Check/ Marriage Cert and sends the completed package to me in Canada.

After I check that all our forms are correct I pay the fees and mail/courier our 2 applications and supporting documents in separate envelopes within one package to the Mississauga Centre.

After my Sponsor application is approved I'll be informed and the file will be passed to Bogota, Colombia where my wife may be called to attend an interview.

The processing time for a received correctly completed Sponsor Assessment is approximately 48 Days.
After Sponsor approval, the additional processing time in Bogota is approximately 14 months.

Has the Newbie got this correct before he starts the process?

Thanks again, Solomon.

Yes, you as the sponsor need to complete Part 1 forms. The document checklist listed in Part 1 will keep you right.

Yes, your partner as the principal applicant needs to complete Part 2 forms and use Country specific guide (part 3). The principal applicant may need other supporting documents (other than photos, etc) such as a letter detailing your relationship.

You can pay the fees at any time.

You do not need to separate part 1, part 2 and supporting documents into different envelopes. Some people do, some do not. Nowhere on the CIC website does it say to do this. However some members of this forum do it that way just for their own sanity. Once CIC receives your application they will organize it in any way they see fit. Personally I put everything in one envelope and separated it by a table of contents (3 table of contents, one for sponsor forms, one for applicant forms and one for supporting docs)

You have got it correct. Remember that any police clearances you get for the applicant must be no older than 3 months by the time CIC receives the application.

And just an added note onto the really good advice from Andrew. Try and keep the medical as close to the date you will submit your application as it is only valid for a year. If the PR has not been processed within this time CIC may ask you to complete another or they may extend it. Obviously avoiding the extra cost of doing another medical is preferable.

Furthermore, it is better to pay all fees up front. This avoids CIC asking for them at a later date which can delay your application. Good luck!

Thanks to all who answered, you have been most helpful.

Andrew-Brit. Your reply posting explained the process in such clear and concise terms it demystified my confusion and I'm sure for others who will come along later unsure of the sequence of events/forms etc. This ensures that the applications for Spousal Sponsorship and Principal Applicant will be done correctly the first time.

We newbies need your instructions to be inserted on the top of CIC's Family Sponsorship Home Page!

Solomon.
