Hey Guys,

I am a New Zealander visiting Victoria BC for a month. I love the place and the culture and want to move here and work.

I have applied for a job, had an interview and offered a job right away. The job is an IT role similar to what I do back in New Zealand. The employer completely understands and will support the work permit application process.

Can someone please advise what is the best and fastest way for me to apply for a work permit while I'm in Victoria BC?

Cheers!

Hey,
Have you looked into the Working Holiday Program for NZers?

canadainternational.gc.ca/new_zealand-nouvelle_zelande/experience_canada_experience/index.aspx?view=d

If you are under 30 (I think) then you get one year straight up. I think the cost is about $200 and it will take a few weeks/month to process. I believe they just changed the rules so you are now allowed to apply from outside NZ. This is a one-off and you can no longer extend it past the first year (but you can apply for a work permit through other routes - just not a working holiday).

If you are eligible I would recommend getting this working holiday first. The WHP is much quicker and easier and it is an open permit so you are not tied to your employer if things do not work out. If you want to stay on past the one year then go through your employer as you mentioned they are offering.

Hope that helps.

Agreed that a WHP visa is probably the best route.

If you don't qualify for a WHP visa, then your employer will have to apply for an LMO in order to hire you. (Note that this processed unfortunately won't be fast or easy). Once your employer has an approved LMO, you can then apply for a work permit. More information on LMOs is here:
