Good everyone,

I arrived on January 18th, 2013.. Do I have to file taxes for the year 2012 if I was not a resident or held ties to Canada for that year? I am getting conflicting answers and would like your input.

If so, Can I go to a volunteer center and they can help or do I have to have someone like an accountant prepare my taxes?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

There would be nothing to file for 2012. Your first return will be your 2013 return (filed next year).

No, you need to be a resident of canada in order to file taxes for 2012. You will have to file taxes in 2014 for 2013, provided that you complete the residency requirements for tax purposes, meaning you have lived in canada for 6+months

Great thanks for all your help!

hi ortom!

i've been looking for information about who needs to file a tax return so this was helpful, you need to have been resident in canada for at least six months. in my case, since my family and i landed in may 2012 and only stayed five days to take care of landing formalities and have a (v. quick) look around toronto, neither my husband nor i need to file a tax return in canada. we will be relocating permanently this july, so this information is important. could you respond if i have misunderstood something or misinterpreted my personal situation? many thanks and all the best :)
