Hello
I just received my CoPR and will be heading to the border this weekend to land. I have a SIN that I got with my work permit, it is not expired yet but will expire in a few months. Do I need to get a new SIN that is associated with my PR right away or can I wait till the old one expires?

You have to apply for the new one earliest at your convenience.

Yes, complete the landing and stop by Service Canada as soon as possible to get your SIN updated.

apply before your current SIN expires. Keep in mind no more SIN card, service Canada gives you piece of paper instead.

Are you sure they no longer send you SIN card later? It was paper first, then card about 5 weeks later a bit more than 2 years ago when I had applied for (temporary) SIN.

On March 31, 2014, Service Canada began issuing SINs in a paper format (confirmation of SIN letter). Production of the plastic SIN cards has stopped.

Yes, I just got my permanent SIN and this is indeed the case. In the past, they would give you a print-out of your new SIN instantly, and your card would arrive in the mail some weeks later. Now, the print-out is all you will get.

Hi guys,

Do we have to inform our FORMER EMPLOYERS about our new SIN? I was working for this lawyer and quit right before getting my PR, so the T4 will bear my old SIN number. Can I ask her to issue my T4 under the new SIN number?

She didn't send me a record of employment yet anyways and it has been 3 months now...

1. No, it is not necessary
2. You should explain to the employer that they have 5 calendar days to issue an ROE when you leave. http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/services/ei/employers/roe/resources/roe_guide/chp1.shtml#empWhenToIssue_e

I am not too worried about ROE, but I still would like to see my new SIN number on my T4, even though it is not necessary, can I still request that my T4 should bear my new SIN, or is it too late?

BTW, my employer could have submitted and ROE electronically without letting me know and without having to send a copy to me, right? Maybe that's what it was... In case she DID submit and ROE with my old SIN number, is it too late to ask to issue my T4 with a new SIN?

Hi everyone, Has anyone had experience that with a new SIN, their previous ROEs and IE claims are no longer available on Service Canada's portal? I wonder if this is normal. Thank you, Vlad
