Hi everyone,

I wonder if we can get a domestic SIN number right after completing the landing process or should we have to wait 72 days (current processing duration) for PR card to arrive on mail.

Did any get a new SIN number based on the landed COPR document?

Looking for some expert advise!

Best,
JK

You do NOT need your PR card to get your SIN number.

I went to service canada a few hours after landing and got my SIN number immediately. It took 10 minutes to get my SIN number.

Hi RYIT,

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's going to be a great help for me and others!

All the best in your new chapter of live in Canada :)

Hello All,

Cant we get SIN from airport upon our landing?

Do we need to carry medical insurance from our home country for initial days ?

Please suggest

a) Some airports have a Service Canada office. Not all do. If there is one where you land, you can apply there. Make sure that the COPR Txxxxxx number is written in your passport by the officer when you land.

b) Depending on which province you are living in, you may or may not be covered immediately. If you do get insurance, get it from Canada, not your home country insurers. Travel insurance is NOT suitable for a new immigrant's needs.

hello,

Thanks for the info. My online status just updated to "decision made", and I know I still may have some time before I get the call/letter, but I was concerned about getting a SIN. I am not sure, but that is what I need so that I can work... Right?

Yes a SIN number is required so you can work.

I got my SIN at the airport itself.

Highly recommended. Must be for minimum 3 months as health Card starts exactly after 90 days of landing.

Please suggest

Incorrect. Some provinces have 3 months waiting periods but some give coverage right away and others have a shorter waiting period.

Thanks for sharing. Off to POE with COPR today. Very nervous as work permit expired. Fingers crossed all goes smoothly and I get the opportunity to apply for a SIN once again. Good luck everyone !

Just curious if anyone knows, my husband had an open work permit about 7-8 years ago and got a temporary SIN number for that, is the number he is going to get as a PR going to be the same?

No. A temporary SIN starts with 9. A permanent one will start with a different number, depending on the issuing province.

concur...tamp SIN starts with a '9'. Once you get PR card or signed COPR go to Service Canada and collect your SIN number. No cads issues anymore, just a simple piece of paper with your new SIN number on it!
