Hi all hoping for some advice,

I currently work for a construction company in the UK as an Estimator, I am to leave at the end of January 2015 and move to Canada. I have been offered the option to become a freelance estimator in Canada paid by the same UK company, how is this to do, what can I expect the tax and insurances % to be?

If anyone has any similar experience to this it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

as the company is not canadian, i'd imagine you would need to be a contract worker/independant contractor and consider them more of a client, not an employer. If so, you would be responsible for remitting taxes to canada for any money you make. i think you can do this quarterly, or you can wait until the end of the year when taxes are filed. for ontario, if you intend to make over 30,000 in a year, you MUST collect 13% HST from any clients and remit it back to the province. I would recommend going to the service ontario website (as well as the website for Toronto) and check out the business section and reading about taxation for sole proprietors. Also see if there is a small business organization in your area that helps people understand responsiblities as an independant contractor. I'd imagine Toronto would have a good one.
