New Permanent Resident- SIN Issue for Taxes

Hey everyone, I already posted this in the Permanent Residency Obligations section, but I wasn't quite sure where to put it and maybe this is a better fit.

I was granted permanent residency a bit over a month ago (YAY) and my SIN number was quickly changed. I gave my employer the new SIN number and they made a copy and said they would change it. Now that it is tax season I went to go see my manager to make sure it was changed, and to make things short they did not change it. They already sent out the T4 forms with my old SIN number. The HR manager said they are unable to issue out a new T4 slip for me but that it should be ok because "the government will know you changed it."

I don't quite feel comfortable with this reasoning, is she right? I have already called CRA and Revenu Quebec to make sure they had the right SIN numbers, so if they have the right one should I be worried my T4 is showing the wrong one?

Thanks!

i'm inclined to agree with your HR person. the taxes you paid through your employer was for 2016, when you were a temporary worker, not a pr, so your t4 would understably have your temp sin # on it. since it doesn't sound like you became a pr in 2016, i don't see how your new PR SIN# would be on your 2016 T4 since it wasn't even issued until 2017. i'd recommend calling a tax accountant to confirm, but i don't see how this is something to worry about.

Thank you for your comments! I tend to get really anxious over everything at this time of year, it's a relief to hear it's nothing to worry over.
