Hello,

Could someone please help me with these questions?

1. I have a spousal work permit that's valid until June, which is when my old passport expires. I got a new passport already to make sure I received it before the old one expires, but am I still allowed to work under my current WP, which has my old passport's number on it? I still have my old passport as well, but my embassy has made it invalid.

2. My WP states 'Unless authorized, prohibited from attending any educational institutions and taking any academic, professional or vocational training course.' On the CIC website it says you don't need a study visa to take courses that last 6 months or less, but my WP clearly prohibits me from taking any kind of course. How can I get a new WP that doesn't prohibit me from taking short courses?

Thank you!

1. Yes
2. You are not prohibited with your current permit (or a new WP) from taking these short courses. The statement on the WP means courses/programs that are longer than 6 months wherein you would require a study permit.

Thanks rjessome!

Do you know if I can find this info online somewhere? It seems there's a lot of important info they don't mention on the CIC website...(or i might have missed it)

It's in the Regulations. http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/SOR-2002-227/index.html

I'll try to dig out the actual section later or you can search through yourself. What you had originally found online is what the Regulations refer to. Everything on the CIC site comes from the Act and Regulations. It's just not that easy to navigate at first.

Hello,

I applied online for a new spousal work permit, more than 30 days before my current one expires, like the CIC website advises. However, after I applied I went to the link with processing times, and here it says it the average processing time is 55 days, which means my current visa would have expired by then.

Am I still alowed to work while my visa renewal is being processed? If not, can I cancel my online application and get a new visa at the border instead?

I have a steady job, but I don't think they'd want to keep me if I can't work for a month...

It's a permit, not a visa. But anyway, yes, since you applied before your current permit expired you are allowed to continue to work on "implied" status.

Hi,

Similarly, i have WP for my old passport, which is now cancelled and new passport is issued. Now I want to travel out of canada and hence want to go to US for getting my Canadian Visa stamping, corresponding to WP. Now
1) The VISA stamping will be in NEW/OLD passport? i.e in application I will put new Passport details?
2) Work Permit will contain old cancelled passport number but Visa will be stamped in New passport. is it correct statement?

Regards,
-P-

Hi Manishap,

1. Your Visa will be stamped in your New Passport.
2. YES. Once you apply for a WP, either New, Renewal, or Extension, submit your new Passport with your application.
