So per the country specific guidelines it says to include 6 photographs per the dimensions shown in the package. I have notice some people write down the applicant's name and DOB on the back of each photo? I can't seem to find any instruction guideline asking for this.

Does anyone actually know what the requirement is?

I don't think it would hurt to put the name and DOB on the back but I just want to make sure they don't tell me to resubmit the photos because we wrote on the back.

personally i wouldn't write on the back. Assuming in your case there are multiple applicants (as you are considering labeling the images) i would instead put them in small folders (the clear ones you get from photo places) and write each of the applicants name on the outside of the pocket.

No I don't have multiple applicants in my application. Only my spouse.

Does anyone know if we need to put down the name and DOB on the back of the photo?

A while back I read that it's good to do this in case the photos happened to get jumbled up with other people's apps. However, I am not sure what the general consensus is on this.

There is no general consensus and there is no need for one. There are country specific requirements, not general requirements.

In my case, the country specific instructions included a request about writing on the back of the photos:
Supply eight ( 8 ) recent photos for each member of your family and yourself. Read the instructions in your guide in the following sections:
• “Completing the Immigration Forms” and,
• Appendix B: Photo Specifications.
Note: On the back of each photograph, write the name and date of birth of the person who appears in the photo as well as the date the photo was taken.
- http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3902e.pdf - bottom of page 4.

In the ones for India there is no mention about this:
Supply six ( 6 ) recent photos for each member of your family and yourself. Read the instructions in your guide in the following sections:
• “Completing the Immigration Forms” and,
• Appendix B: Photograph Specifications.
- http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pdf/kits/guides/3904E.pdf - bottom of page 4.

So you don't need to write anything on the back of those photos.
