There is absolutely nothing wrong in taking more than 10k when you fly in. However declaring is a must. Just coz you declare does not mean that they will question you. The declaration is important to ensure that you are not bringing in illegal money or use this money for illegal purpose. The way you prove it is by having a clear answer on how you got that money. In this case as you are carrying TC's, have information about the account from where this money came from. Ex. Own Savings, Dad's gift etc. It is a norm that anyone landing for a PR usually carried large amount of money. Please declare more than 10K even if it is only $200 more as they can fine you heavily (close to $500) if they catch you with undeclared money and your passport will be noted.Myrah7 said:ya that's the rule u have to declare but that's what im asking has anyone gone thru this...like take a little more than 10k and not delclared ?

I have declared more than 10K twice before. One time they said 'Fine, No Problem'. The other time they asked why I need this money and I replied 'Downpayment for my home' and it was fine.
Yes receipts from Thomas Cook. Also if available the account balance from where you with drew the money for Thomas Cook. But how much extra over 10K are you carrying? SBI has offices in GTA. You can easily and legally bring in money from India with better rates than Thomas Cook. As long as you can prove from where you got the money, you are fine.Myrah7 said:thx u so much finally I get a clear answer so I need to carry the receipt of Thomas cook to declare right? that wld be enough ?
When you are in the plane, you will get an immigration card asking you what items are you bringing (food/tobacco/liquor/purchased goods) that you are over $800. This is for visitors or residents, both must declare what you are bringing. I would declare all cash/gold/household items that you are bringing since you are an immigrant now.Myrah7 said:I was carrying all TC how the hell do they know how much im carrying ....200-300 $ more still I shld declare ?? im anyways gonna put the tc's to my account once I land ...?

I remember when we migrated, we had a document printout in excel of all the items that were brought into the country upon arrival line by line with the dollar amounts. This will ensure a fast exit out of the airport as this will make the customs officer job easier and you will get to be with your hubby in a matter of an hour or so after landing. Unprepared immigrants will have a nice chatting spat back and forth with the customs officer as he will ask you what you are bringing and you will stand there wondering and second-guess declaring in front of the officer the dollar amounts of the goods that you have bought.
Hope this helps!
I don't prefer taking huge cash with me, I ll do wire transfer to my spouse from India to Canada, I ll have merely $ 200 with me for duty free and of-course for junk food !Myrah7 said:thx u primo this indeed was very helpful stay blessed always
on the paper...they just want to know if you have more than x amount of dollars..what do i know..I swam across the ocean with sharks chasing me with $5 in my hands and wearing one shoe (the other one taken by shark) and when i reached the land of milk and honey, someone stole my $5 but luckily with my singing talent I made it somehow in Toronto subwaysMyrah7 said:hahahah omg im imagining that ..... you need money to start your 'omg immigration consultation inc' business..anything above $10000 (I believe that's the amount) you have to declare....not a big deal they just want to know...Myrah7 said:I was carrying all TC how the hell do they know how much im carrying ....200-300 $ more still I shld declare ?? im anyways gonna put the tc's to my account once I land ...?
you better take your laptop with you in case you end up in detention center..we still need you to continue your expert opinions..of course that is the priority... not you ending in detention center...Myrah7 said:ya that's the rule u have to declare but that's what im asking has anyone gone thru this...like take a little more than 10k and not delclared ?
