Same here. It should apply to those who do their landings after the effective date of C-24. I did my two years as a Temporary Resident, then over a year for PR processing. I'm hoping I can apply for citizenship in July 2015 instead of waiting until 2017. :(

My US citizenship is a millstone around my neck due to FATCA that I need to discard ASAP.

I agree with this opinion. I met the member of the parilment responsible for my area. She is a member of NDP. She was agree that this bill will not either strenthgen the citizenship or accelerate the process. Also she has a notice that they should change rules and regulations midstream on the already Permanents residents. It is not fair for them because they planned their steps on the basis that they will get citizenship after 1095 days of physical presence in Canada. We all already started the process of application for citizenship from the first day we started to count the 1095 days of physical pesence. It is possible that they apply this for the new immigrants who will enter Canada after these changes become effective. It would be more fair, as they can plan their lives according to the new rules. Also many professionals like doctors if they are away from practice for a certian time (1-2 years),the licensing bodies would never give them license after passing all required exams. For this reason they have to leave and work at least for one year in any place all the world where they can practice to be able to have a license in Canada. The signature toof a paper to intent even against the Canadian Constitution except if ther will 2 categories of ciizens. The first citizen without intent and the second degree citizen with intent.!!![size=10pt]

It would be fair if you know this befre you come to Canada. You prepared everything including financial support based on that you need 1095 days to get citizenship. Now you have to change all your plans. Also if you get a a good job and in your profession you may be able to adapt to the new rules but if not and they do not allow you to work in your profession it is not fair at all

There is no use to worry about the new changes. The CONs are going to do whatever they want to do.

If you ever read the comments on Online mainstream newspapers there are so many anti immigrant and anti ethnic minority comments. Those people that post these comments are the most probable base for the CONS.

They only wanted the immigrants votes and donations when they were in a minority. Once they got elected their true colours came out. There has been one policy change after another making it harder to become a citizen, sponsoring a relative and processing times. You would have to be really gullible to actually believe the CONS.

I for one know what will make a difference. Making a political donation to another party. I think the Liberals have a proven track record for being fairer to immigrants. If you donate up to 400 dollars to a Canadian federal political party you get back 75% of it back. You can also donate up to 400 dollars to the riding association of a political party (local MP). So if you donate the maximum to get 75% back for the Political party you will get 300 dollars back in tax credits and if you donate another 400 dollars you get back in tax credit 300 dollars, in total for both donations 600 of 800 dollars comes back to you in tax credits.

You have to be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident to donate.

I put my money where my mouth is and donated to the Liberals for the 1st time.
If thousands of us who are effected or whose relatives are effected by the CONs immigration and citizenship policies we can help get the CONS out of power in 2015. Which is probably is more realistic solution then hoping for CONs to make fairer policies.

I agree but before that you have to work on your neighbours friends to vote and do not allow any racists to reach the parliment. We chose to be part of this coutry and they are trying to prevent this country to be part of us

Of course...the conservatives who have increased immigration flows to unprecedented levels are all "racists". That makes sense.

there should be a debate on immigration level but also how fast they can process all the application they receive. If they dont have the resources/funding to handle the workload, then they shouldnt admit that many immigrant on a yearly basis until enough funding approved

You mean all those temporary foreign workers to replace Canadian and permanent resident jobs. While sponsorship keeps taking longer and citizenship gets longer and longer. I don't know how the Media keeps saying the CONs are a party for immigrants. It is quite the opposite.

If you are from the CON party you should be worried. Without the immigrant vote your party will not win the next election. In many vote rich cities the CONs only won with slim margins. The Immigrants and ethnic minorities who were gullible enough to vote for CONs are not dumb. They have reason enough to see the CONs out.

I hope the CONs have even less seats then the NDP. The Cons made me donate to the Liberals for the 1st time in my life and if even one immigrant on this forum donates to the Liberals for the first time it will make a difference.

No, I mean actual permanent residents:

Citizenship and sponsorship is getting longer because the liberals created such a mess with rampant fraud and abuse of the system. the cons are just trying to clean things up and right the wrongs of the past.

No it wasn't it. The Cons implemented lower quotas and had less processing to do. Do you think that all immigrants are gullible or stupid? I would prefer the Liberal "mess" as you say to the present CON "utopia".

Anyway whatever the case. CONS have proven they can't be trusted and deserve to lose every immigrant and ethnic minority votes as as every donation from those communities.

do not worry the conservatives were going down without the new changes. Now all immigrants are afraid that they will apply these new rule even on those who got their citizenship since long time. They are afraid also if they continue in power they will apply worse laws and regulations on immigrants and new citizens only to give meat to some of their cannible voters to feed their xenophobia. I think NDP and liberal would like very much that the new proposed law be effective before elections because it will be a good matter to attract more voters for them and they wll try to mobilizee the dormant new citizens voters mass.

The whole agenda behind this bill is to appease white conservative voters. Cons. knows that they will not get immigrant vote in 2015 election so they are doing whatever they can do to keep their base happy. But the wrong side is that this party will eventually loose ground in coming decades and perhaps will be out of power for longer term. NDP & LIB could be the ruling party in the years to come. The more anti-immigrant policy Cons. will adopt the more they will find in themselves in trouble. For instance, no doubt their MPs will tough time to campaign in those immigrant constituency in 2015 election.

Cons. could be happy for the time being as they press this bill ahead to become a law which will result the millions of immigrant votes will be leaning towards NDP/LIB.

I agree. Actions speak. Look at the US where Republicans are now in crisis. The Dems because of many progressive measures they have taken are forward looking and have won much more respect and trust overall. Canada cant afford to become backward looking ! Ultimately, it will affect this country then. Students will stop coming, workers will move elsewhere...and the country will regress even more from the damage the Cons have done, are doing, and are likely to do !

The bolded part tells me that you are here for a passport of convineance. You prepared financial support for three years? Why, were your financial needs going to significantly reduce once you became a citizen? You probably have no intention of staying in Canada once you get your citizenship, so I am not going to cry a river over you having it more difficult ot obtain citizenship
