New requirements for Canadian citizenship are coming soon
This could affect your application if CIC receives it on or after June 11, 2015.
Applications made using current application forms must be received by CIC on or before June 10, 2015, and be complete. CIC will not consider the date of mailing (postmark). If you cannot submit a complete application before June 10, wait to submit an application until on or after June 11, 2015. New application forms must be used if submitting an application that will be received on or after June 11, 2015.

Adult applicants must now be physically present in Canada for at least 1,460 days (four years) during the six years before the date of their application, and they must be physically present in Canada for at least 183 days in each of four calendar years within the qualifying period. This is aimed at ensuring that citizenship applicants develop a strong attachment to Canada.


Adult applicants must declare their intent to reside in Canada once they become citizens and meet their personal income tax obligations in order to be eligible for citizenship.Among the many benefits of the government's citizenship reforms, the new provisions will deter citizens of convenience – those who become citizens for the sake of having a Canadian passport to return to Canada to access taxpayer-funded benefits that come with citizenship status, without having any attachment to Canada, or contributing to the economy.

Folks do u think all these 3 phrases means that after being Canadian we have to live in Canada for ever 6 months ? In a year if we claim taxes or healthcare ?

If u don't claim we can just live anywhere in the world right

I think the point is, anyone applying for citizenship on or after June 11th, needs to:
1. be present in Canada for at least 183 days in each of the 4 calendar years withing the qualifying period. Being in Canada for 183 days automatically makes you a resident for tax purposes, so you would need to file taxes even if you have zero income.

2. if in any calendar year within the qualifying period you are not present in Canada for at least 183 days, that year won't count.

No, that is NOT what it means, so please stop telling everyone that once they become a Canadian citizen they can't leave Canada! A Canadian citizen can leave Canada for as long as they like and return to Canada whenever they like.

You have to be very careful with the way you interpret the ''intent to reside'' provision.... if it was the way you are saying, it would be discriminatory; in the sense that native Canadians, and people that were naturalized before bill C-24 came into full effect, can move anywhere in the world except for those that become Canadians after bill C-24. This would be a double standard and a two tier system in citizenship which would not make any sense. What it really means is that at the time you file your citizenship application, you must declare your intent to reside in Canada. This is to ensure they can identify Canadians of convenience (according to them...). But once you become a citizen, you are free to go wherever you want... remember an intent is not an obligation and intent can change; however, unfortunately some people will still abuse and that is just sad.
