I am in Ontario. How is Alberta doing these days with falling oil prices?
It's pretty awful to be honest - a HUGE chunk of my friends are unemployed at the moment and have been since the crash hit. Lots of guys collecting EI. Honestly, I think that most of them should have prepared better for the crash (you can't expect to make 75k+ per year in an unskilled market forever), but I still feel bad for them. A lot of people spent more than they were earning, thinking it'd last forever. Nobody needs a $500k house - and a lot of them are for sale now. It's a good time to buy a used truck. The problem is, it's nearly impossible to move away because so many people are locked into mortgages they can't afford and are unable to sell their homes, because EVERYONE is feeling it, even nurses and teachers.
We consider ourselves very lucky - my husband found a great job with a construction company that does both commercial and residential building. They're renovating a bunch of the schools in town over the summer so there is a lot of work for him at least. He plans on staying there (not heading back to the oil field once the economy picks up again, which is what a lot of people are planning), so there's a lot of room to move up and it could be a great career for him.
