Hi my application for spousal sponsorship visa is well underway I've done my medical and police check recently. My question is in regards to our first baby due to arrive close to when we want to move to canada.

I am British and my wife is Canadian. We would like the baby to have a canadian passport and a UK passport however the canadian passport will be harder to obtain due to the baby being born in the UK.

The processing times for applying for a Canadian passport for babies born abroad can be 5 months, and we'd have to get a proof of citizenship certificate which seems to be long winded. Instead of staying in the UK until this is done would it be possible to get a UK passport and travel to Canada to apply for the Canadian passport whilst the baby is in Canada?

Which would you recommend, get the UK one and travel then apply for Canadian? Or apply for the Canadian one whilst still in the UK before travelling?

many thanks

Hi

Your child will need a Canadian passport. As a Canadian citizen, s/he will not be able to apply for an eTA to travel to Canada with the British passport.

When the child is born, you can apply concurrently for the Certificate of Citizenship and a limited validity Canadian passport.

How will the Canadian government know that the baby is a Canadian citizen if they are requiring me to send a lot of documentation to prove it with a citizenship certificate?

when you apply for an eTA they clearly states that you don't qualify for one if you are already a Canadian citizen, so even as dual citizen your baby will not qualify for an eTA and will not be unable to travel. Also when arriving at Canada CBSA can ask a lot of questions about baby, so they will find out the one of the parent is a Canadian citizen, thus the baby is also Canadian, and now every single Canadian needs to enter Canada with a Canadian passport. It could be a hassle entering Canada with a baby if documentation is not in order.

All it really takes is a look at your proof of citizenship and the child's birth certificate naming you. They are basically issuing the passport early based on the presumption that you haven't lied and the child is Canadian.
