Trucks have been coming and going since the shutdown with no requirement to take any tests. The big issue is that not only essential travel is happening. There are people commuting to the US daily who aren’t essential workers. There are also plenty of people going on vacation or to visit family for non-urgent reasons. There is actually still rationing of PPE in hospitals but you just don’t hear about it anymore and it isn’t as severe as it used to be. Yes a large percentage of people now recover from covid. Some have serious life altering health issues with even a minor covid infection and may have the for life so covid is not something that people should not worry about. The survival rate is so high because hospitals have been able to provide excellent care to patients who end up in hospitals. If we let the infections run out of control the death rate will increase because there won’t be the staff available to care for all the patients. There also won’t be the care available if you have a severe heart attack, get into a car accident, etc. and need ICU care. In California at the moment there are people dying because there aren’t beds for them so they are not getting the normal standard of care and they aren’t dying just from covid. Ambulances aren’t arriving because they are all waiting at the hospital with their patients in the back. Not sure why you think everyone is just focusing on air travel. If anything Canada was very late in asking for a negative PCR test for people arriving. 14days of quarantine is not a huge inconvenience if people want to enter Canada. Nobody should be coming in and out of Canada except if they are essential workers like truckers bringing goods into Canada. Thanks to technology you can do a lot of work remotely. You can easily look at the visitor section of this forum to see many people planning to get together with extended family or friends like there isn’t a pandemic. This isn’t the time for visits with large family groups. Daily we are reminded not to socialize with others, to go out for necessities, to wear masks indoors, to stick to our bubbles, not to have parties, etc. I’m not sure you would say take a chill pill if you had someone in your family living in longterm care, who was immunocompromised, who ended up in the hospital on a ventilator or who is a covid long hauler and may have medical issues for their whole lives.

Rapid tests are still offered at many places including Canada and I would suggest that anyone arriving in Canada take a test but one can not count on the results. Even with the PCR test you are only negative at the time of the test but the test doesn’t have a large false negative rate. Please google before replying many of my posts.
But certain things like marriage performed remotely is still not recognized in Canada (despite how much our technologies has advanced). We still have to arrange witnesses, commissioners, venues such as city halls and time to perform marriage.
Remote marriages were never recognized, and most likely never will be. In regular times, organizing a regular city hall marriage is not complicated or expensive. Covid isn't going to be around forever and people are still getting married, properly.
It's rough for everyone now.
Maybe just hold off on air travel or anything else non-essential for the time being.
The seniors home close to me has 20 deceased and 40 staff infected since Xmas. Unfortunately brought in by a care worker.
Hopefully they will be able to step-up the vaccine rollout and in time get back to some sort of normality for family marriages, travel, etc.
Air travel is generally safe. It's up to the traveler and general public to observe the new normality of social distance and personal hygiene.
That said certain things can be done remotely but were never recognized. Despite technology advancement.
Who said your spouse has to quarantine away from you? There's no such requirement. They can stay together .
Sure, but legally recognized marriages are still not. The possibility has always been there, of course, as people have held proxy marriages for the longest time now. That should show you that they have no interest in recognizing these kinds of marriages.
To be honest, even holding interviews remotely is most likely already a step too far over the line for some.
I have no problem with quarantining and no problem with paying for a test before boarding. The issue was that no lab in CDMX could promise to deliver results in 72 hours!! transport canada / cbsa made a requirement that *couldn't be met* by flyers in a dozen countries.
I believe when they announced it they said there would be some necessary adjustments in such cases. And then that's what happened.
There are always such gaps and issues with new policies. And then usually some corrections.
you know what happens in 'gaps' that affect human lives? people die. it's been widely reported that this legislation was rushed through. Even on the first day that it took effect, airlines already knew many passengers were in countries that didn't have molecular tests. The federal government continued to make the claim that no exceptions would be made.
You're right. It was rushed through and there are many ' gaps ' that affect peoples lives, but what's the alternative?
Bring more Covid in and let the medical system collapse? Not everyone is following the rules.
The government should have done more a long time ago then it wouldn't be like this.
If your spouse isn’t traveling with you then yes you should be quarantining separately. The whole point of quarantining is not to pass on covid to other people. Although the website doesn’t explicitly say that you shouldn’t remain with a spouse it says things like you should not quarantine with someone in a small apartment. You an remain in the same home if there is something like a basement. It is just common sense and basic public health principles Quarantining is supposed to reduce the exposure to anyone but the traveller. Exposing the spouse if they hadn’t travelled would add one more potential patient which could not only harm the person but could create uneccessary demand on the health system.
