Hello all,

I was wondering if you can comment on my situation. I have applied in 2012 (inland) and my file is still in process, though I passed most of the stages and paid all the fees. I am now waiting for the passport request. I just got engaged and we are planning to get married in few months. I was wondering what to do regarding my PR application.

1) Should I contact CIC regarding our engagement and add him to my file (as we are living together)?
2) Should I wait to get married and send them the official papers then add him to my file.
3) Or its better to delay the marriage until my file is finalized?

I would be so grateful if you could advise me regarding that. :)
Thanks

Pre-Assessed..
You can't add him until you're married, unless you meet the requirements for the statutory declaration of common-law union.

But you will need to add him to bring him with you. You should notify the local VO when you are getting married and can officially add him after you get married. If you get married before you land in Canada but he isn't added to your application you can't sponsor him later, so be sure to do it.

Adding him to your application means submitting all the forms and documents you'd need to submit as if he were on your application right from the beginning. Then he will also need to do the PCCs, background checks, medicals, etc.

As you are waiting for a passport request, it seems that adding him will extend the processing time of your application. But you really don't have a choice.

Good luck.

Also, if you are living together, be careful to make sure that you don't become "common-law" before you land as a PR, if you plan to land as "single". That's as bad as getting married and not declaring the change in your status.

Thanks guys!! I talked to the call center just this morning, they have advised me to contact CIC ASAP and declare the change of status to common-law as we're living together. Sent them an email this morning. I gues I have to add at least a year to my processing time ;) it has alllready been more than two years waiting..
