Need to pay taxes on my money when I return to Canada?

I landed to Canada in 2009 and left in 2013 without residential ties to Canada.

I have moved back to Canada in April, 2016 after 3 years stay in Hong Kong.

I will file a tax return for 2016 since I have rental income from Hong Kong.

I will report all my income from April, 2016 to December, 2016.

Do I need to report my income before my return to Canada (prior April, 2016)?

I think you become a tax resident since April 2016. Therefore, you do not need to report worldwide income that happens before April but you need to report worldwide income that happens since April 2016.

You will have to report all income for 2016, not just from April to December. It's based on the entire tax year. Even if you returned December 30, you have to report the entire years income.

Incorrect. As OP had no ties to Canada while outside the country, they were not a resident for tax purposes up until their return in April 2016. People are not required to report foreign income from when they were a non-resident.

Thanks specialmary & canuck_in_uk,
Do you have a reference source for not require to report income for the non-resident part (for my case first 4 months) of my foreign income in 2016?
You have the same conclusion as a professional who is expert on giving advice for people returning to Canada from US (google "Paul Kurucz Do I pay taxes on my money when I return to Canada").

Thanks steaky & Buletruck,

I have foreign salary income before I returned in April 2016 and under Article 14 of Tax Treaty Canada and Hong Kong (TTCHK), I should be able to ask for full deduction if I report them in my tax return.
I also received a lump sums of HK$2M pension (approx. CAN$200k) in April, 2016. This pension is tax free in Hong Kong. However, Article 17 of TTCHK does not say anything about how the other Party (Canada) can do to it. Do you know how much I will be charged for tax from CRA in B.C. if I need to report it in my tax return?

Tax Treaty Canada and Hong Kong: google "Agreement Between The Government Of Canada And The Government Of The Hong Kong in Department of Finance Canada".

Article 14 Income from Employment
1. Subject to the provisions of Articles 15 (Directors’ Fees), 17 (Pensions) and 18 (Government Services), salaries, wages and other remuneration derived by a resident of a Party in respect of an employment shall be taxable ONLY in that Party ...

Article 17 Pensions
Pensions (including lump sums) arising in a Party and paid to a resident of the other Party in consideration of past employment may be taxed in the Party in which they arise and according to the laws of that Party.

Call CRA and they will confirm.

Incorrect. OP may be required to report his foreign income from when they were a non resident for tax purposes. At least to Health Insurance BC.

Nope, I'm still correct. Read the topic of this thread. OP is asking about paying taxes on their foreign income earned as a non-resident.

Reporting the income in order to claim credits/benefits is an entirely different matter.

Nope you are still incorrect. Look at the last paragraph of OP's first post.

As for paying taxes or not, I have already answered even before you posted.

I'm guessing you mean last sentence, not paragraph, as OP's first post doesn't actually contain any paragraphs...

The question was asked in terms of paying taxes. It's called context. It's really not complicated.

As for your "answer", you provided no actual help. OP needs to know the answer BEFORE filing their taxes in order to file properly.

You don't have to report the income prior to April 2016 in the 2016 income tax return unless the income was earned IN Canada.
