Yes, you do need to hand in your foreign driver's license: https://www.alberta.ca/exchange-non-alberta-licences.aspx
Then you have to apply for a driver's license as if you had none. Start as a learner and take all the tests. Have a teacher instruct you on driving, etc.

On the link I posted, India is not listed as a jurisdiction with a reciprocal agreement.

An abstract is a good way to proof >2 years of experience.
As the link says, you will not be simply issued a class 5 license. You will need to take tests.

As far as I can tell, the only way that the application would be turned down would be if you failed the tests - at which point you shouldn't be driving.
If you are a permanent resident of Canada and live in Alberta, you are required by law to get an Alberta driver's license. If you fail Alberta's tests, you would not be permitted to continue driving under a different license.
