Start with supervisa, which can be done within a couple of months. Note she will require medical travel insurance during the entire time in Canada, which can be very expensive.

Then apply for her PR. Assuming you or your sibling meet requirements to sponsor, the process for her PR can take around 4-5 years or so.

If the super Visa only takes a few months to get approved, i'm surprised more people dont do that...

how long does the super visa last for?

Just to clarify it's a 10 year visa, but requires renewal every 2 years.

I imagine more people don't do it, because of the medical insurance requirement.

Thanks for the great info Rob.

My common-law partner is in the process of applying for PR... we're waiting for AIP. Her mother is alone in japan. Dad passed away a year ago.

If her mom gets the super visa...she can stay in canada for 2 years, then she has to apply again..... and the max length is 10 years. BUT ..does she actually have to physically leave canada after two years and apply from outside the country? or can she just stay in canada while she's applying after the first 2 years?

Super visa is a type of multiple visas. At the end of the 2 year stay, she would not need to leave Canada to start a renewal from scratch. She can just take a holiday outside Canada and return to Canada to stay for another period up to 2 years.

My in-laws are not going for it because they like going/staying between the countries every six months.

She will only be able to apply for her mom's supervisa, after she gets full PR status. However as a Japanese visa-exempt citizen, her mom could just come as a tourist at anytime and would most likely get a 6-months visitor status upon arrival. Can apply for supervisa while she's already in Canada.

I don't think you actually need to leave the country after 2 years, you can just apply for extension as you would a regular visitor visa, so around 30-60 days before the 2-years is up. Perhaps would just need to run to the nearest USA land border if it's required. Read here for more: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/supervisa.asp

Really appreciate yr replies guys.Medical insurance is very expensive, around C$ 2000 every 6 months.PR will take 4-5 yeas provided the govt opens the door for PR applications for parents next year.

So,any idea how much will a 2 year supervisa cost? which one works best,2 year supervisa or 10 year supervisa? the costs for each?

Depending on things such as deductible and coverage amount you choose, medical insurance can be less than C$1000 every 6 months. Anyways, I have no idea how much 1 year insurance cost. Usually one can only buy insurance for up to 1 year.

She was here last year.Because of her age,the insurance cost was very high. So,it is $2000 and that cost is very high, esp if she has to stay for longer periods but I can't see any other option now.Medical insurance is a must if she has to stay with me

The CIC site doesn't state clearly if a person has to leave the country after 2 years,to US,in a super visa

That's why they need more people to give feedbacks on their websites.

$2000/year is very reasonable I think, for someone her age. I don't think its terribly expensive. I actually thought it was going to be in the $5000 range.

They won't give to her on sympathy grounds because her case is not extreme enough for that, and also, going that route has a very low acceptance rate, but a PR application, she will 100% get PR provided she passes the medical and other things, and if you're able to submit the application before the 5000 limit (which is reached very quickly I might add).
