Hi Folks,

I am in need of some advice from you. I am currently working for a company (for the last 2 yrs 4 months) in the IT sector (I have all the supporting documents ready for my current work, like payslip, experience letter, joining letter etc). I previously worked for a startup way back in 2010 - 2011 (for 1 year 4 months). But I only have an experience certificate from the previous company (no payslip- as I was paid in cash and no other evidence to show as well).

CRS calculator is showing my score is 440 if I only claim points for my current work experience (I have a Masters and IELTS scores ready). If I can claim the points for my previous work, it will boost up to 465 as it will add the 3rd year of experience.

Should I plan to claim the points of my previous work experience (I'm worried that as I do not have any supporting evidence other than an experience certificate, it might jeopardize my application)? Or should I just go forward and apply with 440 (excluding my previous experience) and hope for the best?

Please give your kind advice. Thanks.

you only need a reference letter from both companies containing the information needed by cic. so just contact them for it. you can send them the information that needs to appear (payslip, experience letter etc... aren't a requirement but can be sent as supporting documents) so contact your old company now and try and get the letter. if you receive it, then use it and claim points for it.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. My main concern is, as it was around 8 years back and a small start-up- almost none of the previous employees are with that company anymore. I know my ex-supervisor still works there and I can get the reference letter from him. But if CIC do a security check (I don't know how that works) and visit/ call anyone else in the company other than using my supervisor's contact info (which I will provide in the letter) then most probably he/she won't recognize me. And I won't be able to provide additional documentation if CIC ask afterward (like a bank statement, payslip) as I got paid in cash.

So, should I still go for it? Or should I skip and go with 440 as the score requirement might decrease?

Thanks

it doesn't have to be your supervisor. it can also be the HR of the company who i'm sure keeps records of all former employees. cic aren't stupid. but if you're worried you can skip it and see what the point trends are. 440 is good. if i may ask what were you doing between those two jobs? were you always unemployed?

No, I completed my undergrad in 2010 and joined the first job (up to the end of 2011). After leaving it I took some time off (most of 2012) for the application process and went for my masters in Europe. It took around 2 years 7 months to get done with that including the thesis. Then I joined my current company and still working for them for the last 2 yrs 4 months. I have all other necessary things ready like ECA, IELTS etc. but the first company was a small local startup consisting of 17-18 employees and I'm afraid they don't actually have the records of all the previous employees. That is why I'm facing the dilemma whether to move forward with 440 or add that previous experience only based on a reference/ experience letter.
