Need Help With NOC Codes

So I'm just waiting for my ECA report from WES before I can complete my EOI profile. Whilst going through some of the older posts, I'm starting to doubt my choice of NOC code.
I'm currently with Cognizant Technology Solutions and I work as part of the Application Support team for my client.
When I started out as a fresher in 2012, I used to be part of L1 support (basically providing access to my users to various systems). I think that should be covered by NOC 2282, right?
(Technicians in this group provide first-line technical support to computer users experiencing difficulties with computer hardware and with computer applications and communications software. They are employed by computer hardware manufacturers and retailers, software developers, in call centres and in information technology units throughout the private and public sectors. Technicians in this group are also employed by independent technical support companies or they may be self-employed)

This is what it says on the experience letter I got out of my company for this role:
Client-facing role providing services to a Life Sciences organisation, with a focus on Clinical Data Management applications:
Resolving customer issues in a clear, courteous and straightforward manner within expected time-frames.
Providing access management support to users requesting access to systems containing sensitive live clinical data

Since then, I've moved onto my second role where I sort of led the L1 team and drafted the processes and policies for the work we did. Would this also be counted as 2282?
From my experience letter
As Application Supporter POC:
Aligning support processes to ITIL bestpractices
Creating artifacts to build knowledge base for the team and capture workflows by liaising with Application Managers and System
Owners
Engaging with leadership, team members, clients and other key stakeholders to identify and mitigate pain areas
Mentoring new team members on operational activities Managed escalations from business as well as parallel teams

Finally, my current role is with L2 Support where I look at Incidents and complete end-to-end health monitoring for my application. I'm also the guy who co-ordinates with other teams to ensure that my application functions smoothly.
As a Senior Application Support Analyst focused on Clinical Data Management applications:
Providing L2 Support for user community Streamlined L2 operations to align with ITIL best practices
Performing end-to-end application health monitoring to ensure uninterrupted availability Interfacing with parallel application teams to facilitate seamless functioning of the CDM ecosystem
Managing escalations from business leadership
Providing adhoc reports from application databases requested by the user community

My biggest doubt is if this last role can be entered as 2171:
(Information systems analysts and consultants analyze systems requirements, develop and implement information systems development plans, policies and procedures, and provide advice on a wide range of information systems issues. They are employed in information technology consulting firms and in information technology units throughout the private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.)

Or, do you guys think I can claim my entire work experience under 2171? I'm a little panicked about my application being rejected because of the incorrect NOC code or if the officer isn't satisfied with how well my selected NOC fits with what's on my experience letter.

Help, please!

Though most of us here are from the IT background, we honestly wont be able to confirm your NOC. Its also safer to not consider random opinions for your NOC selection as that might lead to wrong decisions. My suggestion would be to either figure out yourself as to which NOC closely resembles your roles and responsibilities (your designation should not matter so don't worry on that) or sent a mail to e-mail to "NC-NOC-CNP-GD@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca" or "NC-NOC-CNP-GD2@hrsdc-rhdcc.gc.ca" with your query so that they can hopefully help you with the best fit. I am sharing both the mail ids as some say they got reply from NC-NOC-CNP-GD while others say they got reply from NC-NOC-CNP-GD2. Good luck.

Hi Tinevisce,
Unfortunately, no one on this forum is going to be in a better position to determine if your NOC codes are correct than you - you are the person in your role(s) and therefore the person who best understands your role(s) and how well they align with each NOC. You have to have confidence in your own assessment.

If you are very concerned about the Immigration Officers disagreeing with your assessment, include a Letter of Explanation (LOE) and explain why you chose the NOC Codes that you did, in the same way you just explained it to all of us in your post. In the letter, remain humble and tell them that, based on what you've explained, you chose the NOC Codes as best and as honestly as you could, but that you apologize if your assessment was incorrect and hope they won't hold it against your application. Either way, even if everything should have fallen under NOC 20171, that's still a Skill Level A code and you would still have been eligible under the programme. Even if you had entered all of the experience under NOC Code 2282, that's still a Skill Level B code, and you would STILL have been eligible under the programme.

This is how I handled my NOC concerns; I haven't received PPR as yet, but I can't imagine IRCC would hold it against you (or me, I hope) if you give a reasonable explanation of why you chose the codes that you did AND the outcome would have been the same if you have gone the alternate route...

Thank you so much for this! I feel like such a huge tosser, I had no clue something like these emails even existed, or the IRCC would even offer help for this kind of an evaluation. I'll be sending out those emails within the hour.

Thanks again!

Thank you, that's definitely a logical way of looking at it! Can you confirm one thing, though: will the NOC code I use on my EOI profile and (hopefully!) eAPR reflect in any way on any future job interviews I give for Canadian jobs? I know that I'm legally entitled to any job at all once I get through, but obviously if the NOC I selected on my application is somehow visible to prospective employers I'll be getting jobs in that direction right?

I'll be very candid about this: 2282 is a B-category NOC while 2171 is A-category. Going by the lead statements alone, one can tell that A-category jobs are considered more pricey because they require a university degree or something similar. Also, 2282 is basically every aspect of my profile that I currently hate and 2171 distils the stuff I'd want to be doing all the time. The average work days, of course, have a bit of both :)

I'd just not prefer to be constrained by 2282 if at all possible, but obviously, it's not a quibble I'm willing to jeopardise my application over.

LOL, no, your chosen NOC code will have nothing to do with your job search once you're in Canada. You can decide to be an astronaut for all anyone cares once you get to Canada :) I'm pretty sure future employers won't have access to your EE profile or PR application, or anything you indicated in it (The Canadian government and their agents will have access, but employers won't (unless they're part of the Canadian government or one of their agents :) ). That would be a violation of your privacy... Unless you joined the Job Bank and somehow indicated your NOC Code in that...if you did, either withdraw from Job Bank, or remove your NOC Code if you shared it and can...Job Bank isn't a requirement anymore.

Hi Friends,

I had created my express entry profile two days back and was confused in choosing the correct NOC code.
I was working as PL/SQL and ETL ( SSIS) developer for more than 3 years in India. What would be the most apt NOC code? Would NOC 2172 be correct for database/ETL developers.

Key Roles and Responsibilities include :
Requirements Analysis, Design ETL Workflows and PL/SQL scripts, Create Unit and System Test Plan.
Build Database Objects, PL/SQL Scripts and SSIS packages. Prepare Implementation Plan. Warranty and Production support.

Appreciate your response. Thanks!

Hi NandiniAS,
Thanks for your post, but please read through some of the responses at the beginning of this thread. Unfortunately, no one on this forum is going to be in a better position to determine if your NOC code is correct than you - you are the person in your role and, therefore, you are the person who best understands your role and how well they align with each NOC. You have to have confidence in your own assessment. Relying on people on this forum to choose or approve your NOC code for you is not a good idea.

Putting it out here in the interest of others looking for this info. It looks like the above two accounts are no longer being monitored. Instead, it's being handled through a contact form:

Warning! This email account is no longer being monitored.

Thank you for writing to the Career and Labour Market Information (CLMI) Division. This is an automated response. Please note that this email account is no longer being monitored.

If you would like to contact us, we invite you to submit a message by using the following form: http://www1.canada.ca/en/contact/noc.html.

Thank you.

That form has a special category for NOC selection, so that's what I used. It triggered an auto-response to my email; so let's see. :)

I would totally recommend using this form to contact the NOC Unit team. I sent that query to them yesterday, and the reply just came in a few minutes ago: so that's less than 24 hours.

Of course, they can't confirm or deny my NOC either way because of legal mandates (I'm assuming they don't want some random candidate suing them over what they said in an email but was later rejected by the visa officer) but they did outline a clear process to narrow the NOC down.

I'm copying-pasting the response here:

Good day,

Thank you for your interest in the National Occupational Classification (NOC).

The NOC is designed to classify occupational information in the Canadian labour market in a standardized framework and a manageable, understandable and coherent system. Our role is to provide guidance and ensure that search tools are available for individuals to select the most appropriate NOC code.

NOC Search

§ A useful search tool can be found on the NOC Web site (http://noc.esdc.gc.ca/English/noc/welcome.aspx?ver=16) by using your occupational title or keywords related to your occupation in the Quick Search box located at the top or using a complex search in the Search the NOC box located at the top left side of the menu bar. This will generate a list of possible occupations. The education, main duties and employment requirements should also correspond to your occupation.

  • If the search above does not yield a matching occupational profile, please try broadening or narrowing down your search by using different related keywords.

Code Confirmation

  • In order to confirm and validate how closely a NOC code matches a given occupation, you must refer to the NOC profiles in question and review the main duties and employment requirements to assess which one accurately represents your occupation. Other information within the NOC profile should also be assessed such as example titles, additional information, and classified elsewhere sections.

  • When determining your NOC code, even though the job title and the employment requirements are important, emphasis is placed on the main duties.

  • Please note that the final decision for selecting the most appropriate NOC code is each individual's responsibility. Our role is only to provide guidance and support in your NOC search and it is not within our mandate to determine and/or confirm NOC code selections.

We hope this information is helpful. Thank you for contacting the NOC unit and have a nice day.

The NOC Unit

Employment and Social Development Canada

The good thing is searching for Application Analyst on the NOC database only brings up 2171 which is what I want to use. I'll be drafting an LOE anyway where I'll be mapping specific points from my experience letter to the duties listed for 2171.

Thank you everyone for the helpful responses!
