Hi,

If I enter Canada and start my 2 year iec work permit can I leave Canada for 4 months and return to work. My girlfriend hasn't got her visa yet and I need to enter Canada by the beginning of May so want to return back to relaid until she gets hers or I'll lose my visa if I don't go over?

You can enter Canada to activate your IEC permit then leave again but must do so before the enter by / validity date or lose it. However having said that when you do land to activate you must still have 2 years travel insurance and the 2500 CDN proof of funds else the issue date could be shortened. No need to tell CBSA you are simply activating and not staying unless they ask , so do not volunteer that information even though unlikely to cause an issue . Worth sorting out your SIN from Service Canada and if you can a bank account so you hit ground running when you return.

You need to ensure you have travel insurance that allows home trips given some of them cancel out the moment you return home. A good policy will allow multiple home trips but just suspend cover whilst in home country until you return to Canada
