Dear brothers and sisters:

I have an open work permit right now, but I find it is hard to get a job if you do not have a Canadian degree or diploma. So I am going to do my MSC at University of Calgary this Fall, 2014. But I notice there is one thing you maybe have to submit for apply the study permit - proof of payment of tuition.

So here is my question, I do not have enough money to pay the tuition now ($9K, and I guess the university does not allow me to pay before I get my study permit), but my letter of acceptance said I can get almost 30$ support for my first year include TA support and scholarships). So do I have to submit the proof of payment of tuition before apply the study permit? Do you guys usually pay the tuition fee before you apply the study permit? Do you think I can get the study permit?

Thanks so much for your help, I do appreciate it.

Well here in India under a program called SPP, students generally pay first year's ( or sometimes 1 semesters' fees ) before they apply for Study Permit. Living expenses + tuition of first year paid is generally accepted as enough financial proof. And also, if you don't get the permit the university will refund you. I dont know about scholarships or TA. Are you 100% sure you will be funded by university?

Oh yes, I am sure I will get the fund from University, because my supervisor told me by himself.

Even at that u will still need some fund in your account to show commitment on your side. It is important bcos a member here who has scholarship like u has once denied sp bcos he has not attached his bank statement. So u can see that u need to show ur bank statement and it is not just mere showing but fund must be there to complement scholarship fund.

Hi,
I hv TA funds from Univ of Calgary too for Masters! Well, I have around 42K$(with visa differential refund fr Intl students) for two years assistance clearly mentioned in my offer letter n its unconditional. Hv u been given assistance for a year only? If not, then you needn't pay the fees. I am saying this not because I have done the same but, a friend of mine who left fr Calgary for PhD last year paid no fees in advance, thats a different thing she had a good bank balance!
So, if you are going to be funded unconditionally, you needn' t pay the fees.
Another thing, is you course max of 4 years?
As rightly said, bank statements n balance is a must to show that in emergency you can support urself. Either your's or parents'!
Paying fees in advance is a MUST for SPP category students. Dont confuse with this. I left exactly the same ques to my grad coordinator if
I could pay my fees in advance , she hasnt replied yet. But it's not possible because enrollment in classes happen after you discuss with prof n for some extra credits, we have to pay extra. Not sure what that is but it clearly indicates we hv no option but to wait.

Thanks a lot, the point here is I just got 300 in my bank account, so maybe this is the problem I can not let the CIC officer trust that I can support myself.
