Hello ! I wrote this thread back in march :
Hi everyone !

My boyfriend and I met online over a year ago, he's from the US and I'm from Quebec. We're trying to get him to move here legally, but we have are not sure where and how we should start. I read somewhere that I could sponsor him, but even then I'm not sure it would be the right path to choose. He's currently at Walmart and could possibly get a transfer over here.
The only problem is that he isn't done with high school.
We just want to make sure we do everything right to avoid futur problems Wink

Thanks !
So now everything is set, he's coming in september by plane. Our only concern now is going through the border/customs, what are they going to ask ?We already know he has to say he's visiting a friend for X amount of time and all that, but are they going to ask for proof ? Because he's buying a one way ticket, not a round trip !

Edit: Also he's not bringing a lot of stuff, and by that I mean only a bag he can keep with him on the plane, would that make them suspicious for some reason ? Are they going to ask for proof he has money to support himself or anything like that ?
Is there anything important we need to know ?
I'm sorry if my questions seems a bit silly, I just want to be sure everything is done the right way.

Thanks! :D

He is visiting a friend and is planning on staying for 2 weeks would sound good. They might ask if he has funds. He should show them a credit card if he has one. If not, he should have some cash in his wallet so he can show he can support himself while he is in Canada.

Visiting a friend for two weeks and only having a one way ticket? That would trigger my alarm if I was a border agent..

Agreed - he should have a return ticket.

Sure - he can stick with a one way ticket - nothing is stopping him from trying with a one way. However this does increase the chances of issues at the border if he's question (he may not be questioned). If he's question and claims he's only here for two weeks but doesn't have a return ticket - it will be pretty clear to officials that he's lying and planning to stay longer.

A one way ticket, no bags, appears highly suspicious. Visiting means, you come for a certain time and then leave for home again, max 6 months in his case. During the visit he cannot legally work. Even marrying him now during the visit would not really help, this would also look like a marriage of convenience and can do way more damage than good.

So, there is no immediate solution. Enjoy the time together, but do not ruin your relationship by doing the wrong moves.

We're gonna go through the common law/supporting him for a year method and then sponsorship. We do plan on marry but when the right time comes!
So the plan changed, he's going to buy a train ticket for here and back, it's a lot cheaper.

I really appreciate your responses guys, thanks !
