Hi All,

I have landed 1.5 years back to canada and working in US. I have purchased used Minivan Honda Odyssey 2011 ($21,000) after landing. At that time, i required a vehicle to purchase since my previous car was damaged. I have not mentioned any car in the good to follow list.

I will be moving to canada shortly.

Will it be wise to sell the minivan in usa or import to canada. I guess, i will have to pay approx. $5000 for importing the car with an agent, etc. Again the fuel prices are high in canada and minivan gives 17 miles per gallon.

I prefer to have a car in canada (family of 3).

I am little confused, so looking for advise , if i should sell it here or import it to canada and buy a vehicle in canada.

What would be cheaper?

Any advise will be appreciated

I will advise you to sell your mini-van in the USA and buy another one in Canada as prices of Cars are highly competitive! I don't think paying $5,000 for importation to Canada does really make sense where you can sell that one and will still be able to make use of the money to buy something better and cheaper in Canada, and you'll still be able to save the importation fee...

And all Cars in Canada are well built to stand the extreme cold in Canada so it's always good to buy when you get there than importing

...So the rest is all up to you to decide!

All the best!!

I don't know all the ins and outs of bringing vehicles across the border, but it sounds as if this isn't the vehicle you want to continue driving so why put another $5000 into it? Have you looked at the blue book price (think that's what tells you the general value of a vehicle) to see what you could hope to sell it for? There may also pollution control regulations that vary between US and Canada.

Thanks for the advise.
I bought the vehicle for $19,400 (USD$21,000 after taxes). As per Kelly Blue book, i might get USD$15,000 for the selling the minivan.

I am loosing lot of money even after selling, so confused.
Initially , i thought, i will put my belongings in my minivan and move to canada.

I guess, the vehicles are costlier to purchase in canada than usa.

Any more advise.

You'll get a very good 2nd-hand offer in Canada; a very good value for your money as a friend of mine did!

If it'll be very convenient for you to travel with your mini-van with all your stuffs in it, so be it!

Just weigh your options, the one that's much more preferable and convenient should be gone for. You don't need to be confused, just take some fresh air and a lot of time to think about it!

All the best!!

I think the economics is what you should consider. For sure any vehicles you can find in the US is also available here. Try not to over think it. Just focus on the numbers. Or does this vehicle have any sentimental values?
