Hi Everyone,

I am international Student and have recently been accepted for admission to the MEng program at UBC. Although, I am yet to secure an study permit since I have just applied for it last week. For the past few days I have been reading the CIC web-pages regarding the 'canadian experience class' as i am interested in becoming a PR later on. However, there are few queries which needs to be answered. Therefore, I would appreciate replies from anyone who has experienced or have knowledge on similar issue and can provide me legitimate solutions to the following problems:

1. As we are aware that MEng is a one year masters degree course but however could be extended upto 16 months. As per CIC in order to qualify for 'canadian experience class' one needs to have at least two years of 'Canadian post-secondary education'. And for a exceptional case "a one-year Master’s program and an additional year of education, obtained in Canada, before admission into the one-year program (for a total of two years)". Now my question is, after the completion of the current MEng program, if I enroll for a second MEng or MAsc program do I qualify for the 'canadian experience class' apart for the 1 yr work experience. Or does it have to be a one year Canadian post-secondary education before enrolling in to the current MEng program.

2. The UBC MEng program has coop option within it. Does this duration of coop count towards the academic length of the program or not?

3. Thirdly, i'd like to know if anyone has ever transferred from a Meng program to a MAsc program or is it possible to do so? I know i am suppose to talk abt this with my supervisor at UBC but before asking him i would like to know if it is possible or not?

Thank you Every one for your time.

Such questions can only be answered by a person who lives in canada and specifically from UBC. Try searching for an alumni from ur university through facebook, people are generally friendly and will be more than happy to help if they found out ur from the same university. At least i have done the same, i clarified all my queries from searching random people on facebook (from my country of residence and studying in the same univ) and asking them questions

hope this helps..... :)

Hello Alpha,

Following are my answers to your queries:

1. As far as I know, you can enroll in a second masters program to fulfill the 2 year requirement. I would like to point out that the 2nd degree should be a Masters degree. So basically you can do a 1 year diploma, and then a 1 year masters degree and you’ll fulfill the requirement. There shouldn’t be any gap between the two degrees. Also, if your degree is of one-year, it’ll be counted as such for immigration purposes and not 16 months.
2. As per my knowledge, it does.
3. Can’t help you there.

Please keep in mind that I may be incorrect and you should recheck all these facts.
