Hi, we’re continuing on checking everything in these forms and sometimes and the more we read the more we get confused …anyway..

Can someone confirm if for the national identity card is or is not required to send a copy (or translation)? Because in one of the forms they did ask for the card number.

If it’s country specific then it’s for Algeria

In the checklist it does cite the site to check for the requirements and it seems not required other than the IMM5562 (travels).

I just scanned my national ID (I'm from Europe) and sent the scans, no translations or certifications or anything.

np08,
I went to IRCC website to check what we need to send, here is the link:

Do you mind me asking from what country? And how did you confirm that you need to send a copy of the ID?

Because we were told that the passport suffices and there is no requirement for the ID and their application was accepted with no issues, that’s why I’m trying to confirm another positive case (or negative) before adding it.

OR, I guess worst case, we could add it and if not needed I don’t think they’ll send back the application ?!

My wife is from vietnam, she just needs to do a photocopy of passport and it must be notarized.

Croatia.

My checklist at the time (keep in mind checklists have changed several times since February when I sent my application) said the following at the beginning of the section for supporting documents for the principal applicant:

1. IDENTITY DOCUMENTS, TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND PASSPORTS

  • Passport
  • Proof of status in Canada
  • Birth certificate
  • Copies of national identity cards (for yourself and all family members, if applicable), if issued by your country of citizenship or residence
  • Family booklet, if applicable
I just listed the other stuff on the list, but the ID part is word for word. So it actually does say copies.

I also know, from the guides and discussions here, that the general rule is, unless they specifically say they need originals, copies are okay. So even if this just said ID cards, it would be okay to send copies/scans. Especially since it makes no sense to send your actual ID card because then you don't have it anymore.

So you need to go through your checklist (they change often and they're country specific) and double check to see what exactly they're asking for in the identity documents section.

This is why it's important for everyone to follow their own country specific checklist. I needed copies of both the passport and my ID card, and none of it had to be notarized (we just sent scans.) So it's best to just carefully go through the requirements.

Thank you folks for all these details.

1- In my check-list it says:

“Copies of national identity cards (for yourself and all familly members, whether they’re accompanying you to Canada or not”
Then below it puts a reminder to check country specifics etc.

2- I checked the specifics for Croatia and Vietnam. Croatia (same as for Algeria) they require additionally the travels lost. For Vietnam nothing.

I think we will add it just to be on the safe side. Copies and NO translation.

Have you also sent copies (non translated) of the familly booklet?

We don't have a family booklet in Croatia. I have a Chinese friend who is also applying and they have these booklets (I think it's called hukou) in China so he had to include it.

Yeah, it seems it's also in your checklist so include the copies. It's better to have extra than missing documents.

You’re right, better to put all the copies of everything listed. If not required I will not think they’ll return it the application !
Thanks everyone again.
