Hi,

All my documents and my passport have only my first and middle name. The spot for my last name is empty.

I recently got married in march and have not changed my name at all.

Can i leave the spot for the last name empty on my applications as that would match all my documents including passport etc. Or should i type in my husbands last name? If i do that my documents wont match in terms of last name ?

Or is it better to change my name only once i land in Canada after the application is complete.

Marriage certificate says my first and middle name and my husbands first and last name .

Thanks,

Dear Manjit

You are facing a typical problem/query faced by any female from Punjab. Well one thing is for sure do not change/add anything in a surname column without following the due procedure. So you can not add your husband's name unless you have got his surname added to your passport, wherein you have to go to a notary and fill in a form and get a newspaper advertisement etc. Only then his surname is added on to your passport and there after you can continue to use. If you have not done the above do not use his surname in your immigration papers as it would lead to confusion/dicrepancy.

Yes you can change/add his surname once your application is through and you are in Canada. But you might not need it there as they do not bother about your and your husband's surname to be the same. It is a common practise in the west where females have different surnames to their husband's surname. But you will need a surname where ever you fill documents and your middle name that you use now will become or come to be used as your surname, should you decide not to add your husband's surname. So you will become Mrs. K***.

Now coming to the important part ..... will it create problem your immigration processing or not? Well I do not have a definite answer for it. But you may like to tell at what stage is your application is? Are you the principal applicant or dependent? Have you received any communication from the high commission with your name written ie your first name and middle name or did they address you as Mrs K***? Is the column of your surname blank on your passport?Try providing the above answers and then we can try to figure out the possible answers/solutions.

Regards.

Thank you for the reply.

I have yet to apply. I am the principal applicant and when i submit the application i will leave the Last name field blank as it is blank of my passport and all other school documents.

Also i may be able to obtain arranged employment in Canada but i have experience in India under category 4131 as a Private secondary school computer instructor and also as a computer instructor for a private training center. Should my arranged employment be as a computer instructor or can it be anything under the new NOC 38 occupations list? Like say as a bookkeeper or a Language school instructor as these are both official job title under category 4131 in addition to computer instructor?? Please advise !

Thanks
