planning for 11-06-2014!!!
Hi all! I'm a September 2013 applicant from the US. I haven't changed my name yet because I didn't want to complicate the process, but I would like to change it at some point. I've read that it's easier to wait until after landing to do it... Considering that it seems many August applicants have been getting PPR/COPR in the last few weeks, I'm guessing (or hoping?) that I will be soon, so I am definitely going to wait until after landing. Anyway, any tips for the name change? I understand I have to change my SSN and passport plus bank accounts, drivers license, etc in the states... But I'm planning to get an Ontario license and import my car ASAP once I land; will I have to do this with my maiden name if my PR card has my maiden name? How did you all go about this?

I changed mine before they finished the process because your PR card will be issued in the name on your COPR, which as you have stated, will be your maiden name. You can eventually get your PR card changed to your married name, however, you should exepect that they will want to issue everything based on the name they have for your PR card and COPR.

Getting a new passport for the US only takes a couple of weeks, so if you feel like you have that kind of time, I would do it prior to landing so everything is in your married name already.

Yeah that makes sense. I'm already in Canada on a visitor record so I'm not sure sending my passport to be changed is really the best idea right now?

You could get a passport the same day at a Passport Agency. You would need to go in person (there's 28 in the US including some near the border like Buffalo, NY - see http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/information/where-to-apply.html) and tell them you are planning to travel out of the country that same day. Then send a copy of the new passport to CIC and your CoPR will be issued in your new name.

It's typically easier to change your name before landing. The naturalization instructions, for example, ask for legal proof of change of name after you became a PR if you want your naturalization certificate in a different name than your PR documents so this could get hairy if you push it off.

If I change my passport now, what happens with the visitor record stapled in my current passport? I think they will return the old passport but would I have to carry both with me if I left the country? Thanks!

Get a notarized copy of your entire passport, and take the visitor record out of it and just paperclip it to your notarized copy. You can in fact mail you passport to the address listed for the renewals and they will mail it back to you at your Canada address. If you read the more specific instructions for appointment renewals (as suggested above) you likely won't qualify, however you can pay the extra fee for expedited processing.

Why do you believe she wouldn't qualify?

If the OP plans to head back to Canada to continue visiting her husband, she could write and sign a document indicating she is traveling abroad that same day (or if she flies in, she'd have her return ticket to show) assuming proof of travel is required (the signed document is required only for those Agencies that ask for proof of travel; several don't). I know people who have had same day service in NYC and Philadelphia (for business travel and vacation purposes). One got the passport in under 2 hours while waiting at the Passport Agency (they required appointments and only the last appointment of the day was available). I also know someone who used an expediter service and mailed his passport from Canada to the expeditor and had it back two business days later. Of course, expediters add an additional fee for their service since they are saving you quite a bit of time and legwork.

Because she stated that she was already staying in Canada with her hubby. If she is driving only to stay at 'home' you can assume that they would not accept that as needing same day services as there is no pressing urgent need to have it right now. She can in fact return home without her passport.

I don't see any reason why she would also want to pay that kind of money as I do believe it is roughly double the price of a normal passport. She can request expedited services on her own, without having to involve an intermediary and that would normally cut down the 'normal' times by more than half. I know I just renewed my passport via mail and regular renewal last year. I made a photocopy of my passport, had it notarized (in case I needed to travel out of Canada) paper clipped my visitor record to it and then mailed off my passport forms and fees in standard mail. I got my new passport back in 4 weeks at my address in Canada where I was 'visiting' with my hubby. No extra fees involved.

If she has a trip planned to the US (for anything from shopping to visit family to changing her name on her passport) she will not be able to reenter Canada without a new passport. Therefore, if she were planning to head (albeit back) to Canada that same day, she would qualify for service as when she was at the Passport Agency, she would have a trip abroad planned within 5 days.

Her situation really isn't any different from someone who had a trip abroad planned for several months but only settled on the exact date a few days ahead of time (for whatever reason: work, great fare, friend's calendar) and therefore has a trip to Europe planned in less than 5 days? Or from someone who forgot their passport expired until they went to pack a couple days before their trip? Or from someone who naturalized as an American and needs to get a US passport before a trip planned the following day?

That being said, several Passport Agencies (incl. Buffalo) don't even ask for proof of travel per the link in my first post in this thread.

Actually adds about half. The expediting fee is $60. A normal passport for adults is $110 alone or $140 with passport card. A name change is free if her prior passport is under a year old; otherwise costs the same as a renewal.

Thank you for helping me understand your perspective. It seems we have different preferences.

I wouldn't be comfortable choosing to be in a foreign country without my passport (e.g., even if the OP were a dual citizen she must enter the US on her US passport) since it would limit my ability to travel if needbe. In the eventuality that family in the US had some sort of emergency and the OP had to hop on a plane, the airline would most likely deny boarding without a passport (except perhaps if she's at an airport with a pre-clearance facility and she can convince CBP to clear her and help convince the airline to let her board). So, in all likelihood, she'd have to go to the nearest US Embassy and Consulate and get an emergency passport before flying, taking up valuable time. Alternatively, the OP could drive to the border and plead her case, but that again would take up valuable time.

Also, the OP is in her 7th+ month from application and may get her passport request (or CoPR) any day now. It would stink if she got the passport request, knowing it may take 6-8 weeks before she has her new passport (4-6 weeks processing time per US State Department right now plus processing time plus mailing time, for which 2 weeks from US to Canada is not uncommon). Or if she needed to send the CoPR back and things got delayed. I'd want to get my new passport to CIC as soon as possible to keep things going smoothly.

So, for me, $60 to expedite my passport for the peace of mind of knowing I would have my passport back in my new name so my CoPR is issued in my married name and that I could travel if I wanted/needed to is well worth it.

And that's before considering other variables like when the OP did her medical, which if needed to be redone, would cost way more than $60 as would having to go through a formal name change procedure afterward.

can someone clarify how to go about notifying CIC of a name change? Our application was sent in March, and we are still waiting to hear back. I am guessing if I was to change my name, it's best to wait until we get notification our application was received, and my husband was approved as a sponsor? I read somewhere to wait until after the process to change my name, now i'm seeing the opposite is best. I wish i knew this a month ago! :)

It's no big deal if you change your name *during* the process. Key is to change it before the CoPR is issued to make your Canadian life simple.

To change your name, send CIC an updated copy of your passport with your new name. Many will say it is easiest to do it after your husband is approved as a sponsor because then you'll be able to include your universal client ID in the e-mail/case specific enquiry. However, you can also inform CIC by e-mailing them at CPCM-EXTCOM@cic.gc.ca. Either way, CIC will update your legal name and issue the CoPR in your new name. It's relatively simple. I would just encourage you to get a confirmation from them or follow up a few weeks later with a second e-mail to ensure they get it and process it.

I don't think I will be able to go and update my passport in person since my husband works crazy hours with the one car... I am still debating sending my passport to be changed and requesting it to be expedited. I am just nervous because I've seen that some applicants our of Ottawa have recently had COPR issued without a passport request. Would that totally screw me if they issued the COPR in my maiden name while my passport is being changed to my married name?? That's the iffy part for me... Any thoughts or advice?

Just an update: I got my name changed on my passport! I sent it off to Ottawa yesterday and got that standard auto-reply email back. Hopefully they will update my file soon.

Now I'm wondering about importing my car after landing... It is in Canada as a "visitor" with me. I haven't changed my name with the NY DMV yet and wasn't really planning to any time soon, as I believe I can just have my Ontario license issued in my married name based on my COPR. I'm just wondering if it will be a problem that the title of my car is in my married name when I go to export/import. Has anyone been in a similar situation? It would be such a huge hassle to have to go back to NY to the DMV then order a new title, wait for it to come, etc, etc...

No. It won't be a problem when you export it. Just keep up with your old passport as well in case they ask on the US side to see it. It is a very very simple process.
