Hope someone can help me with this issue..

My wife and i got married March 2010. We immediately worked on the requirements for the spousal application and she just got her VISA approved last week. Now the thing is the name on her passport is still her MAIDEN name. We want her to use MY last name when she gets here. How do we go about changing it when she reaches canada? when she is interviewed my the immigration officer can she request for that already so that when they submit her papers and her Permanent Resident Card & Social Insurance Number is processed it will now show her new name?

any suggestions?

Her visa an PR card will be issued in the name that is on her passport.

there is no way to change that even if she shows proof to the immigration officer that she is married and goes by a new name?

PMM is right - the name on the PR card will be the same as on the passport.

My wife went through the same thing - we changed her last name a couple of months after she landed in Canada. It was a pain to get new PR card, new SIN, new Health card - but it all worked out nicely without any hiccups.

thanks for the response cono_sur:

so you had to go to 3 different offices to have her name changed? were there a lot of requirements? we were advised by the embassy here in the Philippines that as soon as she lands in canada and when she speaks to the immigration officer that she presents her marriage certificate right away so when they process her PR card and SIN they can use the document presented that she is married so they can have her PR card and SIN show with her new name. not sure if that will work.

The PR card name change was done through postal mail. The Health Card and SIN cards were done in person.

I suppose what you were told at the embassy would work - it's worth a shot to try when you land. If that fails - then you've got a fall back option.

@ ilovemywife: what were the requirements for her passport from the philippines, coz my wife is trying to renew her passport to show my lastname; on the website, they require her to get a CFO sticker, or something of the sort...

what were the requirements of the Canadian Embassy for your Spousal Application??
are there other documents other than that on the 2 checklists that were asked from her??
was there and interview??

pls reply asap...

My husband and I are in same boat, but we want to wait when we get our citizenship. They will give you the option of name change which will be much easier.

Change of name at the immigration office can't be done... Subsequently the PR card and the health card... However, you can change the name on the SIN card as long as you present a marriage certificate (English/French)... Service Canada office that issues the SIN card has different rules from the provincial offices.

No, but her COPR will be issued in the name on her passport as well as her PR Card.
