Name change on Canadian passport

Hello All,

Do I have to carry two passports in case if I change the name while traveling? I assume they are going to send me the old passport back with cancel stamp on it.

So you are saying that you will leave Canada, change your name in a foreign country, and try to renew your passport abroad?

No. I am changing my name here in Canada and renewing my passport in Canada. I just want to know what happens to the old Canadian passport after name change.

Once you have legally changed your name, I don't see why you'd have to carry both your old and your new passport. You will be traveling with your new name on the airline ticket (same name as shown in your new passport).

The only reason you would carry your old passport on a name change would be if you have visas in the old passport that haven't expired.

No. I am changing my name here in Canada and renewing my passport in Canada. I just want to know what happens to the old Canadian passport after name change.

when you change your name, you can request to change the name on your passport, your old passport will be cancelled and no longer valid at the same time of the application.
If you don't apply to change your name on the passport, your old passport will still be valid. But at renewal, you will have to use your new name.
