My wife is here and we are both really excited. She left the Toronto airport on the morning of August 11 and the immigration officer said he would mail her the card....however it isn't here yet. When should it arrive?

Also..what do we do about her medicare? She got sick with an infection and i had to pay for everything. So i wonder when she gets medicare coverage or how.

Thank you!

Look for a full service ServiceOntario office close to you, and bring your proofs of PR (AIP letter will work too). It will take them 90 days after you apply, but you are eligible to apply today.

We live in New Brunswick, but there is a Service Canada office just 30 mins from us.
Oh you said Toronto, so I assumed....

I am not sure how the health insurance works out there (I have always been lucky enough to avoid needing it!). But she is eligible.

Hi there,
Apparently immigration say between 2-3 months to receive the PR Card at home.
To apply for her health care card and also sin number you can visit any Service Ontario and request it. All she will need is an ID and also the paper immigration gave to her when she landed.

All the best in your new jorney! Where did you apply from? Would you mind sharing your timeline?

Thanks. Congratulations.

We were married in her country in August of last year, because they wouldn't allow her back to Canada under a visa due to her having a failed refuge status application.....it's a long story lol.

I was worried it would make our application look bad, so I took on an expensive lawyer and filed our application in December. A lot of work! Thanks to be God our application was answered quickly.

So now that we are just trying to figure out the ins and outs of being new to the country. I find immigration confusing because I never had anything to do with it before meeting her.

I'm also wondering if permanent residents have any trouble finding work? When she was here on a work visa the LMO process was a nightmare. It seemed like no job wanted to deal with it.

I am happy for you, that you were able to get this far! Congrats! I too didn't have much to do with immigration until recently.

In terms of PR's having trouble with jobs: they have basically the same rights as a citizen, just cannot vote (I am sure there is one or two more differences, but from my readings I can't remember any important ones). So, they can work like we can, she will get a SIN that will not start with a "9" (temporary SIN's start with this). So there is really no way for anyone to know that she isn't a citizen.

Also along those lines, I know here in Southern Ontario, my wife has had her OWP since the very end of June. She already has a job offer that she is contemplating.... I hope this process works out as well for your wife too!

PRs can work just like any Canadian citizen. The LMIA process for foreign workers is a nightmare, but none of that is required for PRs. There are some government jobs that are restricted to Canadian citizens only, but those are generally high-ranking or high-security jobs. If you're looking for a "standard" job, then there aren't any issues with being a PR and holding that position.
The other difference is that PRs can lose their status if convicted of a crime, or if they do not meet the RO.

Do not meet the RO?

Yeah my aunt married somebody from Thailand and he was a real bad guy, and he got 3 years prison. They deported him after he was released. My wife is pretty awesome so no worries on that lol.

Thanks for all the answers guys.

Just right now my main concern is proving she has been in Canada the correct amount of days so she can become a citizen someday. I presume bank statements, pay stubs, doctor visits, etc will be sufficient proof.

Her brother wants to immigrate here too. He's a great worker but his english is insufficient. Any ideas?

He needs to meet the language requirements if he wants to immigration as a worker - either in English or in French. So if he doesn't, that's what he needs to focus on. His sister can't sponsor him. He has to qualify on his own.
