My son's passport is expired, can I still apply for citizinship for him?

My son is 5 years old, and his passport has expired 3 months ago, I can't go to the consulate to renew his passport due to COVID (the office is closed).
Can I still apply with his expired passport with an explanation why it wasn't renewd, or do I have to get him a new passport prior to applying?

Yes you can. I did with my kids american passport. I called ircc before I did and they mentioned the requirement is a valid ID whether expired or not. If you feel more comfortable can also call them. This was in 2020 and my application has been accepted since Aug 2020

You do not need a passport for your child to apply. Just include a copy of PR card and birth certificate.
