You don't clear Stage 2 if u fail medical or there's some problem with your biometrics. 1st stage is more likely secure.
They just cleared this doubt in the IRCC webinar.

Sir this is equivalent to Study permit. Why are you misleading others?

As stated in the letter, this is first stage approval and whoever's letter this is, it states their application will move to the next stage.

Do you have any idea whether applicants getting AIP get any kind of update on their GC Key account or not ? (Like review of eligibility passed or anything like that ?)

It is reported there is no update in the GC key acocunt, it only arrives by email

You might have cleared 75% rest 25% would be for Medicals and Biometrics

If they find hat you are medically dangerous to Canadian citizens they will reject in the same way biometrics if they find any criminal case in central data base they will reject

The second stage as they cleared in the webinar is for approval of visa. Study permit as the name suggests is the permit that allows you to study and AIP grants that. Hope that makes sense to you now.

It really shouldn't be called approval in principle either, the study permit goes through the first stage, the migration officer checks all the paperwork is in order. Second stage the criminal records, medical, genuineness of paperwork etc is examined.

I believe first stage covers everything except criminality, medical and biometric. Paperwork is checked under first stage.

If you can’t submit a complete application, we’ll process your application in 2 stages.

Stage 1: We check your eligibility

In this stage, an officer reviews your application for

• a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution
• a Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (if you’ll be studying in Quebec)
• proof that you have enough money for
  • tuition fees
  • living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
  • return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada
• any family ties you may have to Canada
• evidence that you’ll leave Canada when you no longer have legal status

If your application passes this first stage, we’ll let you know in your online account. This doesn’t guarantee that we’ll approve your application and issue you a study permit.


Our aim is to pass most applications through stage 1 before the fall semester starts.

Stage 2: We check your application for admissibility and any changes to your eligibility

In this stage, an officer reviews your application for

• a medical exam, if needed
• police certificates, if needed
• your biometrics
• any information that changed after we reviewed your application for eligibility

If your application passes this second stage, we’ll approve it.


At this point, when current travel restrictions change, you’ll be

• ready to travel to Canada and begin your studies, or
• able to continue your studies in Canada, if you’ve already started studying online

This 2-stage process will only apply to study permit applications

• submitted by September 15, 2020, and
• for programs that start, or have started, in spring, summer or fall 2020.
